Religion:
Judaism and Christianity
Both believed: there is one god (who wasn’t the king)
Gave them rules to live by (10 Commandments) = same basic beliefs
Both believed in salvation – if you are good you will go to heaven
All of this caused Europeans to try and spread their religion to others and to take back important religious possessions and places (Crusades)

Gave them ideas about government (democracy and the republic)
Philosophy, science, technology, literature, art, etc
When the Roman Empire took over Europe, it brought the ideas and beliefs, as well as Christianity (see above) with them to other places (like France, England, and Spain).

Kings sent armies to the Holy Lands (Middle East) to regain land from the Muslims.
Europeans discovered (goods) foods and spices from Asia.
Europeans began to want these foods and spices!
