What was European culture based on?
Religion: Judaism and Christianity Both believed: there is one god (who wasn’t the king) Gave them rules to live by (10 Commandments) = same basic beliefs Both believed in salvation – if you are good you will go to heaven All of this caused Europeans to try and spread their religion to others and to take back important religious possessions and places (Crusades) AKA: GOD

Great Civilizations: Greeks and Romans Gave them ideas about government (democracy and the republic) Philosophy, science, technology, literature, art, etc When the Roman Empire took over Europe, it brought the ideas and beliefs, as well as Christianity (see above) with them to other places (like France, England, and Spain). AKA GLORY

The Middle Ages and the Crusades Time period after the fall of Rome = “Dark Ages” Kings took power Feudalism: economic system that controlled the people Life dedicated to the word for word teachings of the bible. Kings sent armies to the Holy Lands (Middle East) to regain land from the Muslims. Europeans discovered (goods) foods and spices from Asia. Europeans began to want these foods and spices! AKA: GOD + GLORY

The Renaissance The search for knowledge It means rebirth After the “Dark Ages” People wanted to regain the knowledge and power of Greeks and Romans. Rediscover science and technology! Kings and Nations grew in power. Wanted to become bigger, stronger, and richer! Marco Polo established trade with Asia gave Venetians control of trade with Asia Kings began to send explorers find a new way to the Asian goods. AKA: GOD + GLORY + GOLD

What did European culture lead to? The Portuguese discovered the southern tip of Africa. Put pressure on other kings to explore. Other Europeans were motivated by god, gold, and glory to explore Wanted to spread their religion, gain wealth, and increase their nation’s (king’s) power. This led people to explore, discover, and colonize
