2 Figure 1 Guanosine triphosphate (GTP) depletion and p53 in ischemia-induced apoptosis. This model proposes that GTP depletion and the activation of p53 are sequential steps underlying the apoptotic phenotype seen after renal ischemia. Guanosine and pifithrin-alpha restore GTP and inhibit p53, respectively, thus preventing apoptosis.
