4. Problems caused in 1930’s
There was a Boom and Bust in the cotton Industry.
Supply and demand affected the economy of Texas by the overproduction which led to the Stock Market Crash.
Fewer acres were planted for cotton from the 1930’s -1940’s.
Many farms were lost to banks for overproduction.

5. Events during the Great Depression
Black Tuesday October 29, 1929 = Wall Street stock market collapsed.
13 million Americans had no jobs
Industries (businesses) were closed
Overproduction led to price decreases
Dust Bowl created a disaster and effected a large part of Texas

7. The Dust Bowl! Bad farming practices led to a decade of poverty.
Dust Storms swept through the Great Plains causing erosion (wearing down of the land), drought and destruction of jobs.

North Texan farmers moved west to California to look for work
Fewer people worked in rural Texas in the 1940’s.
Dust storms affected a large part of Texas
States outside of the Dust Bowl were affected
Problems managed by planting trees and vegetation to prevent erosion.
Dust Bowl affected economic development because many farms were lost to banks.

9. President during the Depression
The Depression took place during President Hoover’s term
He was not re-elected!
Hooverville - Shanty Towns built by homeless people during the Great Depression.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President and helped America recover.
His plan of action would be called the New Deal.
The New Deal programs improved the lives of Texans during the Great Depression by employing thousands to build roads and bridges.

12. John Nance Garner “Cactus Jack”
Served in the Texas House of Representatives
Served as the speaker of the House for the U.S. House of Rep.
Served as Vice president during Roosevelt’s first term.

13. Miriam “Ma” Ferguson and W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel
They were governors during the Great Depression.
Ma Ferguson supported President Roosevelt’s reform policies.

15. WWII Political Impact Over 750, 000 Texans served in the war.
Audie Murphy was the most decorated and famous soldier from Texas. He even starred in Life magazine and was in 44 films.
Many Texans received the medal of honor.
Many military bases were built in Texas during the war because Texas had a moderate climate and large expanses of land.

16. WWII Economic Impact Food and goods were rationed
The economy began to grow
Women joined the workforce

17. WWII Social Impact Migration to urban areas.
Desire of minorities to be integrated because of their involvement in the war effort.
Over 22,000 Texans died in the war.
