5 RIGHTS There are many rights at each level of government: federal, state, local Some important rights at the national level: Bill of Rights – first 10 amendments freedom of speech, religion, press, right to a trial by jury and a lawyer, government cant search your stuff without a warrant

6 RESPONSIBILITIES Support and defend the Constitution
Stay informed of the issues affecting your community Participate in the democratic process  VOTE Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others

7 RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in your local community
Pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities. Serve on a jury when called upon. Defend the country if the need should arise (selective service)

9 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Which mandatory responsibility do you think is most important for US citizens? Do you think any of the voluntary obligations should instead be mandatory? Why? Pick two voluntary responsibilities from the list and explain how you can perform these tasks over the next year.
