Do Now: Answer one of the following questions.
1.) How do you feel about the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio? Who is at fault? Who should be punished?
2.) Have you ever been so angry you acted without thinking? Do you believe Romeo thought before he acted and killed Tybalt?

1.) Do Now: Answer the question, turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share with the class.
2.) Discuss/Share: Captains will share Do Now with the class
3.)Mini-Lesson: We will read be reading a news article together about a murder. We will identify the 5 Ws and 1 H for the article.
4.) Group Work: Following that activity we will work in groups, and we will work to write our own newspaper article about either Mercutio OR Tybalt OR both.
5.) Reflection: Why is it important to understand the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio?

Together we are reading the news article about a murder. We are looking for the 5 Ws and 1 H: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. All of this information will be told to us if we read the article. This information is mentioned in almost every work of journalism and police investigations. It is some of the most important information we can be given! So what are the 5Ws and 1H?
Who: Michael Roque and Joao Souza
What: Roque murdered Souza
When: Killed Sunday night, found Monday
Where: Binghamton University dormitory, Souza’s room
Why: Motive could not be provided, but Souza was a target
How: Souza was stabbed to death by Roque

4. You’re The Reporter Now
With a partner, grab copies of the play, turn to Act III, Scene I, identify the 5 Ws and 1 H (who, what, when, where, why and how) about the murder of Mercutio OR Tybalt OR both. Then, in a well-developed paragraph (10-12 sentences) that follows the news article format (use the article we read today as a guide), you will write your very own news article about the murder of Mercutio OR Tybalt. Finish for HW if you don’t finish in class. Try to be as creative as possible! Give your article a catchy headline that draws readers in, come up with a name for your newspaper (ex. The New York Times, Daily News, Wall Street Journal, etc.)
This assignment is worth TWO homework grades.

5. Reflection
We’ve reached the climax of our play. Romeo has been banished from the city of Verona by Prince Escalus because he murdered Tybalt, who murdered Mercutio. This is a turning point in the play because Romeo had to choose between love (Juliet and the Capulets) and remaining loyal to his friends and family. Why is it important to understand the deaths of both Tybalt and Mercutio?
