2 Popliteus Muscle Plays a key role in the movements ofthe knee joint.
Origin: From the lateral surface of the lateral condyle of the femur . Insertion: the posterior surface of the tibia, above the soleal line. Nerve supply: Tibial nerve. ■ Action: 1.Medial rotation of the tibia on the femur or, if the foot is on the ground, lateral rotation of the femur on the tibia. 2.Because of its attachment to the lateral meniscus, it also pulls the cartilage backward at the commencement of flexion of the knee

4 Popliteal Lymph Nodes:
About six lymph nodes are embedded in the fatty connective tissue of the popliteal fossa . They receive superficial lymph vessels from the lateral side of the foot and leg; these accompany the small saphenous vein into the popliteal fossa. They also receive lymph from the knee joint and from deep lymph vessels accompanying the anterior and posterior tibial arteries.

5 Tibial Nerve: Arises in the lower third of the thigh.
lying first on the lateral side of the popliteal artery, then posterior to it, and finally medial to it. The popliteal vein lies between the nerve and the artery throughout its course. The nerve enters the posterior compartment of the leg by passing beneath the soleus muscle.

7 Branches: Cutaneous: The sural nerve Muscular branches supply both heads of the gastrocnemius and the plantaris, soleus, and popliteus. Articular branches supply the knee joint

8 Common Peroneal Nerve Arises in the lower third of the thigh.
Closely following the medial border of the biceps muscle in popliteal fossa. It leaves the fossa by crossing superficially the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle. It then winds laterally around the neck of the bone, pierces the peroneus longus muscle, and divides into two terminal branches: the superficial peroneal nerve and the deep peroneal nerve

10 Branches: Cutaneous: sural communicating branch. The lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf Muscular branch to the short head of the biceps femoris muscle, which arises high up in the popliteal fossa Articular branches to the knee joint.

11 Obturator Nerve: It leaves the subsartorial canal with the femoral artery by passing through the opening in the adductor magnus .The nerve terminates by supplying the knee joint.

12 Fascial Compartments of the Leg
Two intermuscular septa pass from its deep fascia to be attached to the fibula. These, together with the interosseous membrane, divide the leg into three compartments-anterior, lateral, and posterior- each having its own muscles, blood supply, and nerve supply.

14 The Front of the Leg Muscles: The tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, peroneus tertius, and extensor hallucis longus.

16 Anterior Tibial Artery
It arises at the level of the lower border of the popliteus muscle and passes into the anterior compartment of the leg through an opening in the upper part of the interosseous membrane , accompanied by the deep peroneal nerve . In the upper part of its course, it lies deep beneath the muscles of the compartment. Inthe lower part , it lies superficial in front of the lower end of the tibia . Behind the superior extensor retinaculum, it has the tendon of the extensor hallucis longus on its medial side and the deep peroneal nerve and the tendons of extensor digitorum longus on its lateral side. In front of the ankle joint, the artery becomes the dorsalis pedis artery

18 Branches: Muscular branches to neighboring muscles Anastomotic branches that anastomose with branches of other arteries around the knee and ankle joints

19 Nerve Supply of the Anterior Fascial Compartment of the Le
Deep Peroneal Nerve One of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve . It arises in the substance of the peroneus longus muscle on the lateral side of the neck of the fibula . The nerve enters the anterior compartment by piercing the anterior fascial septum. It then descends deep to the extensor digitorum longus muscle, first lying lateral, then anterior, and finally lateral to the anterior tibial artery .The nerve passes behind the extensor retinacula.

21 Branches Muscular branches to the tibialis anterior, the extensor digitorum longus, the peroneus tertius, and the extensor hallucis longus. Articular branch to the ankle joint.

24 Superficial Peroneal Nerve
one of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve . It arises in the substance of the peroneus longus muscle on the lateral side of the neck of the fibula. It descends between the peroneus longus and brevis muscles, and in the lower part of the leg it becomes cutaneous.

26 Branches: Muscular branches to the peroneus longus and brevis Cutaneous: Medial and lateral branches are distributed to the skin on the lower part of the front of the leg and the dorsum of the foot. In addition, branches supply the dorsal surfaces of the skin of all the toes, except the adjacent sides of the first and second toes and the lateral side of the little toe .

27 The Back of the Leg CUTANEOUS NERVES:
The posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh It descends on the back of the thigh . In the popliteal fossa, it supplies the skin over the popliteal fossa and the upper part of the back of the leg lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf. The sural nerve The saphenous nerve

28 Superficial Veins The small saphenous vein
It arises from the lateral part of the dorsal venous arch of the foot . It ascends behind the lateral malleolus in company with the sural nerve. at the lateral border of the tendo calcaneus Runs up the middle of the back of the leg. Pierces the deep fascia and passes between the two heads of the gastrocnemius muscle in the lower part of the popliteal fossa ; it ends in the popliteal vein .

30 Tributaries: Numerous small veins from the back of the leg Communicating veins with the deep veins of the foot Important anastomotic branches that run upward and medially and join the great saphenous vein
