Walkerton – 10 years after
The Event the kick started the development and implementation of Best Practices for the sustainable supply of quality drinking water in Ontario
recognizing that consumers are entitled to safe drinking water
Provides for the prevention of drinking water hazards through control of drinking water systems and testing
Owners and operating authorities of systems must supply water meeting the standards of the Act
Promulgation of drinking standards & regulations to replace the Guidelines
Passed legislation on nutrient management
Passed complex drinking water legislation
Passed legislation requiring full cost recovery
Passed legislation on source water protection
Our job was to ensure that we undertook contribution, development and deployment of this change in a practical sustainable manner.
Year in review
The year of Financial Crisis and the economic infusion through Infrastructure Sustainability initiatives, H1N1… which has come and gone. These issues and the rebounds have left most of us pleased to see the end of 2009 and the opportunities that unfolded as we move on with All in all an interesting but productive year for my Presidency.

Changes to Regulation 170 to incorporate changes needed for control lead in drinking water
Development of Corrosion Control Program (CCP’s)
Safeguarding and Sustaining Ontario’s Water Resources a strategy for Ontario, as committed to under the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement; to develop Ontario’s Water Conservation and Efficiency, Strengthening the regulation of new and increased intra-basin transfers, Implement the province’s water charges program to municipal users.
Operator Issues
Address the Changing demographics and needs to enable a sustainable Operator development program (particularly in the North and remote areas). There is need to change how we deliver our training programs but obviously not at the expense of weakening the Operator Certification program
ORO issues are being addressed, we have been active in pursuing change to better meet mutual Municipal, Provincial and operator development interests.
AWWA WQTC
The AWWA Water Quality Conference will be coming to Toronto in This is one of the best conferences that is put on by the AWWA. We are very excited and pleased to be the host section involved and our very capable Lee Anne Jones ( she will be the outgoing President at the time) has volunteered to be the local arrangements host. Planning for this conference has begun.
Strategic Plan
Communications Plan Development
One of the challenges for any President is to maintain, encourage and improve communications to all levels to our membership. Communication is the back bone of our organization, and as we all know that an investment in communications always yields the best interest. OWWA has engaged the services of Ehl Harrison Communications as part of our strategic plan to help build and develop our OWWA communications. This plan is starting to take shape and is expected to provide an effective plan to guide both internal and external communications.
Rebuilding Committees
Every Strategic Plan Development looks to strengthening its organization internally and externally. We have continued to review our committees, their mandate and effectiveness and I wish to thank our Committee Liaison Directors for their continued effort and support in this endeavor.

The quarterly meetings with the MOE and OMWA continue to be a great opportunity to raise concerns about current legislation, quality, operations management and change.
Recently our focus has shifted to issues that may be of significant importance to future operations and management of our systems. Things like climate change impacts, emerging trends and sustainability. Our intent is to provide further opportunity for the development and involvement of our membership at the committee level in the form of working groups.
Youth and Our Association
The OWWA continues to plan for succession by encouraging our YP’s and Students to learn about our profession through attendance at our work shops, technical seminars and conferences. We have implemented reductions in Seminar Rate to ease the financial burden for YP’s and Students to attend these functions.
We have also happy to advise that the AWWA continues to offer reduced membership rates for new YP’s.
The Ontario Section was successful in obtaining the most YP memberships in the last quarter.
The OWWA has continued to work with WEAO in the development of OWWA/WEAO Student Chapters at educational institutions. This year we have set up 2 Chapters (Univ of Guelph and Univ. of Western Ontario) The OWWA/WEAO YP’s/NP’s oversee the liason and development requirements at these student chapters.

With Wayne Stiver moving from this Committee to become the AWWA Director, we were more than happy to have our Past Chair Steve Burns ably fill the position.
Water For People
For the past three years we have had OWWA representation at WFP-Canada Board represented by Tony Petrucci. Tony has announced that his term will be up as of the ACE Conference in June of this year. This is to thank Tony for his outstanding efforts and contribution to the people in parts of the world where safe drinking water and sanitary facilities are a dream come true. (I hope that I have the opportunity to announce the new WFP Director.
