Acceptable Use of Technology
“Students must continually adapt to the influx of technology and new societal demands, including the push for 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, as well as student-centered and project-based learning models.” (Cramer, M. & Hayes G. P. 38) “Restrictions and bans don’t keep mobile devices off school premises or eliminate their use. Students often hide their use from teachers and administrators, whether or not it’s for school purposes, and teachers and other staff often hide mobile device use from administrators and students”. (P.39) Acceptable Use of Technology in Schools: Risks, Policies, and Promises

The Rules for BYOD Gadgets Go to School:
The Benefits and Risks of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Patricia Bruder The Rules for BYOD Students must have portable electronic devices turned off except during prescribed times. Students may not use any device to photograph or record (either in audio or video format) another person on school property without that person’s permission. Any unauthorized use of portable electronic devices will lead to confiscation. Any confiscated portable electronic device may be searched by parents or law enforcement as necessary. Students who violate this policy may be subject to disciplinary action.” (Bruder, P. P. 15) Finally to ensure the rules, the following are just a few of the rules that can be set in place Have you informed your tech department that there will be multiple outside devices on the network. Have you sent information to to parents about the BYOD program? Do you have proper logins and passwords for guest devices? Have students/parents signed off on the acceptable use policy as well as a waiver for theft, loss, or damage to student owned devices. (Bruder, P. P. 15)

Our Action Plan The next steps
8
Background: Proposal: Plan of ACTion Over 9,000 Students at SRSD119
Vickers is very technology oriented Proposal: Install the operating system Ubuntu on laptops that are not being used at the Education Centre. The students from our technology club Vickers Computer Minds will help with the installs.
9
Step 1 (Testing) Plan of ACTion
Securely erase the hard drives on 2 laptops Install Ubuntu Setup student account that only has access to the web browser Send 1 laptop to the Technology Department to get their approval
10
Step 2 (Batch work) Plan of ACTion
Once the Technology team is satisfied we duplicate the process to other laptops. We would need batches of 5-10 laptops Create a disc image of the master laptop Copy image onto 5-10 laptops at a time I will show students this process
11
Step 3 (Distribution & Learning Period)
Plan of ACTion Step 3 (Distribution & Learning Period) Once we have reached 10 successful laptop installs we will distribute them. First have the testing done at Carlton with the help of Victor and his class. Since the laptops will be limited to the web browser, students should already knowledgeable on how it works.
12
Step 4 (Updates & Repairs)
Plan of ACTion Step 4 (Updates & Repairs) The master laptop will be updates and another master disc image will be created. The process will begin again. Updates are expected to be done every 4-6 months. In the event that a laptop has been vandalized such as keys being popped out, the laptops will not be replaced.
13
Benefits Challenges Cost $$$: laptops will not cost anything nor will the OS Control: Devices are limited to what they can do (Google Chrome) Learning: students will be able to take part in coding It will be time consuming to manage these devices (especially in large numbers) Limited technical support to teacher & students new to this system.
