1 KS2 SATs INFORMATION EVENING
Thursday 4th April 2019

2 Types of Papers KS2 SATs Papers: Reading Grammar and Punctuation
Spelling Maths 1 (arithmetic) Maths 2 and 3 (reasoning) Writing is assessed throughout the year so we do not have a writing paper

3 About the SATs This is the fourth year of tests on the 2014 NC
The children won’t get a level but a scaled score where 100 is average If the children’s scaled score is above one hundred, then they have met the expected standard for Year 6 If the children’s scaled score is below one hundred, then they are working below the level of the new Year 6 standard We have used previous year’s thresholds to help us to make predictions – no guarantee they will stay the same.

4 Grammar and Punctuation - External
The grammar test is 45 mins It is worth 40 marks It will focus on understanding of tense, clauses, sentence level features and contractions etc. Range of question types (multiple choice, ticking, circling or underlining) Questions get more challenging further in to the paper

5 Answer

6 Spelling - External The children will be given a 20 word spelling test
The test is worth 20 marks There is no set time limit The word is read, then the sentence, then the word again The spelling score is added to Grammar to create one overall SPAG score

7 Reading - External Children will be given 1 hour to complete the test.
They will be asked to read a text in their reading booklet and then answer the corresponding questions before moving on to reading the next text. There will be 3 texts which could include fiction, non-fiction and poetry The reading paper is testing the children’s ability to infer, retrieve, comment on the structure, explain an authors choice of vocabulary or relate information in the text to their own lives or the world around them.

10 Maths- External Paper 1 (arithmetic)
The arithmetic test is a 30 min paper The paper is worth 40 marks The paper tests the children’s ability to answer addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percentages of amounts.

12 Maths – External Paper 2 and 3 (reasoning)
The reasoning papers are both 40 mins They are both worth 35 marks They test the whole KS2 Maths curriculum in various contexts

14 Teacher Assessment of Writing – Internal
The children will be assessed on independent writing tasks over a period of time – over a range of different writing genres e.g. diary, letter, explanation, information, persuasive, biography. The children will be assessed on their handwriting, sentence structure and punctuation, text organisation and composition and effect. They have to include all of a set list of features in at least six pieces of work in order to be classed as having met the Year 6 standard

15 What we will do to help during exam week
Usual routines: Same classrooms Same main members of staff Same structure as previous assessment weeks. More creative sessions Where possible apply for additional time Restrictive process Set criteria to be judged against Application process only just open Only ever a small proportion of the year group Split the sitting of the test Small quiet groups Staff available Readers (where allowed) Reassurance Friendly / calm experience Encourage questions from the children Small group sizes: Additional time / Support: Only a couple Something to help concentration Boost a positive experience Sweets!:

16 What can you do to help? Send them in: Early to bed: Reduce pressure:
Avoid absences Nervous / upset tummies Illness Talk to the school Vary test times Come in just for the test Broken arms! Scribes / move rooms On time – the office will be ringing immediately on any absence Early to bed: Early night really helps A good filling breakfast Breakfast club Reduce pressure: Important but only a snap shot On going teacher assessments Both submitted to their next school Keep a balance Same routines: Equipment No new pencils case / calculators Reading book
