A Day in the Life of McKinney-Vento Transportation

McKinney-Vento Act Local educational agencies (LEAs) must provide students who are experiencing homelessness with transportation to and from the school of origin at the request of the parent or guardian (or in the case of an unaccompanied youth, the local liaison).

Homeless Liaison is contacted ASAP when a student needs transportation.

Transportation request is made to RSSS Transportation Department and Contract Transportation Service.

Contract Transportation Service immediately responds whether or not there is availability.

If RSSS Transportation determines the MV vans and Special Transportation buses are not options then the request is turned over to regular route coordinators to assess the feasibility of adding the student. A bus would need to be able to go outside of it’s regular district.

Once transportation is arranged a transportation agreement is confirmed with the parent.

If transportation can not be arranged promptly by any of these modes then mileage reimbursement is offered to the parent if they are able to transport.

What Helps…… Daily conversations between the Homeless Liaison and the Transportation Contact through s and phone conversations. Monthly meeting in person with the Homeless Liaison and the Transportation Contact. Biannual meeting with Transportation Director, Student Services Director, Homeless Liaison and Transportation Contact.
