1 Topic 5 math practice

2 1. Which expression can be used to find the product of 6 and 48?
A. (6 x 400) + (6 x 80) B.  (6 x 40) + (6 x 8) C. (6 x 48) + (6 x 8) D. (4 x 6) + (8 x 6)

3 2. Write an equation to find the amount that is 4 times as much as 100.
       +          -          x        %        =          40       400         10            4

4 3.  Desiree's school has 3 fourth grade classes, each with about 27 students.  What is a reasonable estimate of the total number of fourth grade students in Desiree's school?  Select the two that apply. 90 81 80 100 75 Tip: Remember to use a benchmark number as well as a rounded number.

5 4. Mr. Schmidt gives 7 tours of Zion National Park each day
4.  Mr. Schmidt gives 7 tours of Zion National Park each day.  There are 14 people in every tour group. Write an equation that shows how many people go on one of Mr. Schmidt's tours each day. Use an array to show that your answer is correct.

6 5. To find the product of 8 x 54, Andreas first multiplied 8 x 50 to get 400.  What should he do next? Subtract 32 from 400. Add 8 to 400. Multiply 8 x 54. Multiply 8 x 4.

7 6. Trinity added 30 pages of photos to her photo album
6.  Trinity added 30 pages of photos to her photo album.  She put 7 photos on each page.  Tell one way to determine how many photos she added to the album.

8 7. The high school marching band has 198 band members
7.  The high school marching band has 198 band members.  Each member is asked to pay $9 for transportation. Which expression can Erwin use to get the best estimate of the amount of money collected to pay for band transportation? 100 x 9 200 x 9 200 x 10 190 x 9 Explain your choice.  Why will it give the best estimate?

9 8. Taelor used the array below to find the product of 160 x 4
8. Taelor used the array below to find the product of 160 x 4.  Which statement explains why she can use the array shown?                 10                  6 She cannot use the array shown to find this product. Because the product of 160 x 4 is ten more than the product of 16 x 4. Because the product of 16 x 4 is ten times more than the product of 160 x 4. Because the product of 160 x 4 is ten times more than the product of 16 x 4.

10 9.  Each of Mrs. Jepeway's 31 students will need 5 notebooks this school year.  The notebooks come in packs of 10. What's the best estimate of the number of packets of notebooks that she will need for her class? Tell why your estimate is the best estimate.

11 10.  The Fort family bought 3 meatball sandwiches and 2 fruit salads for lunch.  Each sandwich cost $7 and each fruit salad cost $3.  How much did they spend on lunch?  Tell whose solution you agree with and why. Mindy's Solution Mason's Solution I added the 3 sandwiches and 2 fruit salads together to get 5.  Then I added the costs together and got $10.  Then I multiplied 5 x 10 and got $50. I multiplied 3 x $7 to get $21 (the cost of the sandwiches).  Then I multiplied 2 x $3 to get $6 (the cost of the salads).  Next I added $21 to $6 to get $27 (the total cost of the lunch).

12 11. What's the best estimate of the product for the problem shown below?
693 x 8 4,800 5,000 5,500 5,600

13 12. A bakery truck carries 400 loaves of bread
12. A bakery truck carries 400 loaves of bread.  How can you find the number of loaves of bread in 8 trucks?

14 13. Michelle and her family will participate in the ALS fundraising walk this weekend.  She has 4 members of her family participating and they each will walk 3 miles.  If Michelle's grandma donates $100 per mile, how much will the family have raised to help cure ALS?  $1000 $1200 $ 700 $ 107 Show your work and justify your answer.
