The Indwelling Holy Spirit
Romans 8:1-16 The Indwelling Holy Spirit It is a surprise to many to know that very few bibles use the word “indwelling” – only the NASB pre 1995 contains it of common translations. Yet if you ask many religious people about the indwelling of the Spirit, they have a number of ideas. Romans 8 seeks to place the idea of the Law of Christ and the Holy Spirit as the same – alive inside us

Difficulty in Understanding
Confusion over terminology n Ro 5:18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
5
Romans 8 the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death – vs 2 if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness – vs 10 Mt 20:1 ¶ "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 "Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. Mt 20:8 "So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.' 9 "And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius.

The WAGES of Sin Colossians 3:25
Wage of Sin = Eternal Punishment Deserved – Luke 16:25 Given at the end judgment – Romans 2:5 Only one person receives – Romans 1:27 Guaranteed – Hebrews 12:25 Colossians 3:25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Lu 16:25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. Ro 2:5 ……in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. Ro 1:27 (Those who sin will) receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. Heb 12:25 …..much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. Col 3:25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality.

The WAGES of Sin Wage of Sin = Eternal Punishment Revelation 21:8 Ezekiel 18:20 Re 21:8 "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.“ Eze 18:20 "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
10
The CONSEQENCES of Sin Jeremiah 15:4 A consequence is a predictable result: It may or may not be deserved It may happen anytime It may not happen at all It may affect many Jer 15:4 "I will make them an object of horror among all the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.
11
The CONSEQENCES of Sin Consequence of Sin is unspecific May not be deserved – 2 Samuel 12:14 Could happen anytime – 2 Samuel 12:11 Possibly affects many – Numbers 16:32 It may not happen – Jonah 3:10 2Sa 12:14 "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.“ 2Sa 12:11 "Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; Nu 16:32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men with Korah, with all their goods. Jon 3:10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
12
Why wages? So God can be just So that there can be a reward
- Romans 2:6-8 So that there is a distinction in men - Hebrews 11:6 So God can be just Ro 2:6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds": 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation and wrath Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
13
Why consequences? So God can be merciful
So that the law can be NATURALLY known - Romans 2:14-15 So that men would fear God in life - Luke 13:1-3 So God can be merciful Lu 13:1 ¶ There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? 3 "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
14
AN Example in Genesis 2-3 Genesis 2:17
“the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” Genesis 3:22b-23a “lest he ….. live forever" …. the LORD God sent him out of the garden
15
AN Example in Genesis 2-3 We did not inherit the WAGES of Sin -We are not born sinners -God desires we should all be saved We inherited CONSEQUENCES of Sin -We are born with mortality -To make us fear death & seek God
16
An Example in II Samuel 12 There were still consequences
David was FORGIVEN his sin “Jehovah has put away your sin; you shall not die” There were still consequences "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die”
17
Conclusions Consequences may be permanent - Repentance may not help - Sometimes we can remove them
18
Conclusions Wages need not be permanent - Romans 6:23
- Repentance saves – Acts 2:38 - We cannot atone – Ephesians 2:6
19
Conclusions God permits consequences to avoid wages - His mercy for all men - The saved and the lost God desires all men to be saved - Therefore He permits consequences of evil - This is why God permits evil to occur to the good
20
Conclusions Righteousness has wages and consequences - Wages = eternal life - Consequences = fruit of the Spirit
