1 Counselor’s Corner March 2019 Mrs. Snaith PreK – 1st grade
Guidance Lessons The topic for our next classroom guidance lesson is Self-Control. Self-Control is about being able to regulate yourself. Can you resist distractions? Get a handle on your own emotions? Inhibit your impulses? Delay gratification? Plan ahead? The biggest increase in self-control typically occurs in children between the ages of 3 and 7. Research has shown that kids with poor self-control and planning abilities are more likely to have aggressive behavior problems and are also more likely to experience anxiety and depression. How can you help? Children learn best through play. So games such as Freeze, Red Light/Green Light and Simon Says are great ways to develop self-control. First Grade students will learn about Wiggle Worms. Wiggle Worms have no self-control. They make poor choices and are always in trouble. Once wiggle worms learn about and practice self control, they turn into beautiful butterflies. Students will play games to practice self control. In one game, only students assigned a certain number can touch a balloon being passed around. As hard as it is, they must wait until their number is called to touch the balloon. In Kindergarten the story No David by David Shannon will be read and discussed. In this story, David is always getting into trouble because he does not think before he acts. Students will play Freeze Dance to practice self-control. When the music stops, they must freeze and cannot move until the music begins again. Finally, PreK students will learn about and practice self-control through a variety of games and activities such as Ready, Set, Wiggle and the Bubble Game. In the bubble game, a bubble machine will be used and students must practice self-control by only popping bubbles when the OK is given.
