1 Our local galactic cluster
Groups of Galaxies Our local galactic cluster

2 Our Local Group or “Cluster”
Is composed of 54 + Galaxies: Two Large spirals: The Milky Way and Andromeda One smaller Barred Spiral: Triangulum Satellite Galaxies of the Milky Way Two small Irregular Galaxies the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds 12 Dwarf galaxies Satellite Galaxies of the Andromeda (24 dwarfs) Pieces Dwarf Galaxy (midway between Triangulum and Andromeda) more Dwarf Galaxies! It has radius of about 5 million light years!

4 The Virgo Supercluster
Includes our Local cluster and at least 100 others Has radius of 55 million LY Is centered on the “Virgo Cluster” not us Ours is an outlying cluster

6 The Structure of the Universe
Altogether there are over 10 million superclusters of galaxies in the universe. They are not evenly distributed. They form a spider-web like structure surrounding vast voids with little or no visible matter

9 The Universe as we see it
When we look at the universe Distant objects are as they were in the past. Thus when we see the very edge of the universe, 14 billion LY away, We are looking into the past.
