The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 80 percent of medical equipment in some countries is donated or funded through foreign sources, but only 10 percent to 30 percent of the donations are ever put into operation. According to Robert Malkin, a professor of the practice of biomedical engineering at Duke University, “there is a great risk for every medical device donation that it’s going to hurt the recipient”.

Workshop Break into groups of 3-4
Your organisation has been offered 100 free wheelchairs of varying types from various sources like hospitals, care homes and individuals. Discuss the pros and cons of what you would do with these chairs based on the fact that your organisation is working in a low-income country and you know there is a need for wheelchairs. Come up with three or four recommendations of what you would do. Feedback to the group after 10 minutes
