4 TABLE 1: Control of Women over Family Income
Revision Based on the data in Table 1, report and discuss the findings. TABLE 1: Control of Women over Family Income Nature of Control Before Assistance After Assistance Full Control Partial Control No Control 15% 13.75% 71.25% 20% 14.58% 65.42%

Revision FINDINGS In reference to Table 1, it is found that control of income mostly lie with male members of families. In the present sample, 71.25% of women expressed that they have no control over income earned. Only 15% of the women, all being the heads of the families, have control over the income earned. Control here implies that women are the decision-makers of expenditure from the income. Even after assistance, the scenario changes very little. In the post-assistance stage, only 20% of women can exercise control on spending in respect of income from the assets/schemes provided. In the case of 14.58% of the women at the post-assistance stage, occasionally they are consulted by a male head of the family in respect of incurring expenditures for the family % of the women are not consulted at all by male members though assistance was given to female members. Thus, it is seen that though women have to bear the burden of the loan for assistance, they are in reality not the owners to income generated from the assets/schemes. This indicates that the status of women in the family remains virtually the same. They have to accept the male dominance within the household with little or no entitlements of income. Assistance in this respect has made little difference to the economic liberation of women.

Revision Write 3 recommendations for the following conclusion. CONCLUSION In conclusion, it can be said that two factors contribute to the declining standard of English among UPM students. They are the teaching of English in schools, and the changed role of English. With regard to the actual teaching of English in schools, there are two reasons which affected students’ mastery of the English Language. Firstly, there is insufficient time for language learning because students do not have enough contact hours to practice the language. Secondly, the classroom environment is not conducive to language learning because language classes are large and there are lack of language laboratories for language practice. Besides that, the changed role of English has contributed to its decline among UPM students. Since English is no longer the medium of instruction and it is not mandatory to pass English in the SPM examination, the decline in the standard of English has been a natural outcome.

Revision RECOMMENDATIONS From the conclusion, two recommendations can be made to arrest the decline in the standard of English among UPM students. Firstly, it concerns the teaching of English in schools. English periods should be increased since one of the reasons for the poor standard of English among UPM students is insufficient time for language practice in schools. Next, it is recommended that the teacher-student ratio be reduced from 1:40 to 1:25. A smaller class will enable the teacher to give more individual attention to students. Lastly, more language laboratories should be built in schools so that students can have more practice to improve their oral-aural skills. Secondly, it relates to the changed role of English in Malaysia. Even though the medium of instruction in schools is Bahasa Malaysia, one recommendation that may be considered is conducting another subject in English for one period a week. In addition, the government could think of making a pass in the SPM English examination compulsory.
