Possible response: “This” refers to the comment made by Marie Louise de Florimond, a friend of Elliot Templeton’s whose “sexual voracity was insatiable.” (62) She paid Isabelle a back- handed compliment by calling her “pretty” but without “chic” or elegance. Elliot took the loose woman’s remark personally because he tried very hard to make Isabelle and his sister Louisa presentable before his rich French guests by taking his niece and her mother to shop for Chanel clothes. By de Florimond calling Isabelle an inelegant “savage” woman, she made Elliott’s plan unsuccessful, which made him feel humiliated.
