Background In 2012, the City of Chicago’s Department of Innovation & Technology developed WindyGrid, an enterprise geographic information system. Designed for City Personnel, as a unified view of City operations, giving them access to spatial datasets such as 911 and 311 service calls, transit and mobile asset locations, building information, geospatially-enabled public tweets, and other critical information. Building on the success of WindyGrid, Chicago worked to expand an open-source solution of its city data to the public and OpenGrid launched in January, 2016. OpenGrid won the Amazon Web Services (AWS) “City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge” earning the Dream Big Award of $50,000 in AWS promotional credits. WindyGrid - Departments were successfully able to use WindyGrid to provide situational awareness and incident monitoring for coordination during special events, weather emergencies, use for historical data retrieval, and to provide real-time advanced analytics
