Introduction to the First workshop on MPI at the LHC
Perugia October Perugia, October Paolo Bartalini (NTU)
2
MPI: huge progress in the last 2 years
Tevatron keeps providing progress/refinements Rich set of particle level observables (directly comparable with the predictions of the QCD models) Brand new measurements: UE in Drell-Yan, MB <PT> vs Nch etc. Recent progress on UE also from HERA Wide spectrum of LHC feasibility studies in both the soft and hard regime MB, UE, long distance correlations, Same sign W, 3jet+, mini-jets, survival of rapidity gaps etc. MC Models Refinement of the existing models MPI now in the new reference MCs: Pythia 8, Herwig++, Sherpa, … New ideas for the future: dynamical structure of the hadrons, connection to diffraction New MC Tunes, Automated tools Perugia, October Paolo Bartalini (NTU)

Goals of the MPI@LHC’08 workshop
Focus on the MPI measurements at the LHC including the impact on searches Prepare the conceptual ground for a uniform description of the MPI in different contexts pp (including diffraction), HI Low PT, High PT Do we speak the same language ? Use the legacy of the HERA/LHC and other recently held w/s Start a new tradition of workshops: evaluate the candidatures for the possible 2009 edition in the final round table Perugia, October Paolo Bartalini (NTU)

Sala dei notari: no wireless connectivity
Oratorio Santa Cecilia: local organizer may be able to provide connectivity If possible the speakers should upload their material on the agenda at least one hour before their session starts pdf format recommended Otherwise they should bring the material 1/2 hour BEFORE the start of the session to the chairing convener Perugia, October Paolo Bartalini (NTU)
