Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People – History
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has been through an incredible journey to get where we are today. They were founded at Crufts in 1982. In 1983 – Lady became the first hearing dog to be matched with a deaf person in the UK. In With over 20 hearing dogs now placed and a further 26 deaf people waiting to be matched. In The Charity has doubled in size since 1986 and they placed the 100th hearing dog. In 1992 – Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People were delighted when HRH The Princess Royal accepted our invitation to become our Royal Patron, and she holds the title to this day.

In 1994, HRH The Princess Royal opened the northern training grounds, The Beatrice Wright Centre, in North Yorkshire – which relocated to East Yorkshire in The umbrella association Assistance Dogs (UK) was launched. In Hearing Dogs for the Deaf changed its name to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. In 1999 – Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People opened the main office and training centre – The Grange – in Saunderton, Buckinghamshire. In Hearing Dogs celebrated its 20th birthday by unveiling our new logo and new burgundy hearing dog jackets.

In 2012 – Hearing Dogs for the Def People with their 30th anniversary was marked with another rebrand of our old hearing dogs jackets and a new, more modern logo. See above.

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People are very proud of the progress they have made in the last 30 years, there are still thousands of deaf people who could benefit from a life-changing hearing dog.

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People – Partnership Instructor
Once the Deaf person accepts a Hearing Dog for the Deaf People. The Deaf person must cover with the following requirements:- 2 days meet at the Hearing Dogs Training centre - (York or Buckinghamshire) Must undertake 1 week at the training centre with the Hearing Dog for the full assessment, training, etc. A few days at home location with the training with the partnership instructor. Annual visit by Partnership instructor to re-assess the Hearing Dog.

I had Yoshi for three years and it has been a life changing experience for me from ACCESS to CGI. My previous employment at ACCESS where Tom McCormick was instrumental in developing the Assistance Dogs Guidelines for the employer and the managers and the work colleagues.

The Assistance Dog Guidelines has to be in collaboration with the Deaf Person to ensure that their needs are adequately met. Majority of the information was gathered from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People to ensure the well-being of the Hearing Dog. Hearing Dogs for the Deaf have a partnership instructor which is permanently assigned to the Deaf person who will be meeting the partnership instructor every year to ensure the well-being of the Hearing Dog and the training are maintained to high standards on sound training, behaviour at home, work and leisure (shopping, restaurants, etc.)

The reporting manager/s were undertaken with the working dog risk assessment.

The Hearing Dogs for the Deaf People can provide the handouts with the information for the employers.

As part of the communications plan to the rest of the staff in the workplace to advise them of the Hearing Dog is coming into work place.
