This is the inside of someone’s living room. You will notice the bag of blankets in the corner. At night everyone in the house will sleep in one small room. Some houses only have one room. Others might have 2 or 3 if they are lucky.

This is a typical kitchen in Malawi. Some houses will have a separate building that has a little more sophisticated kitchen. However, it is not very common, and by sophisticated, I mean that they have a fire pit that is raised off of the ground.

This is the chimbudzi or bathroom. They are located in a separate building. However, you will not find a potty or sink in here.

4. Some chimbudzis will have a flap covering the doorway.

Basically you have a hole in the ground. And you thought porta potties were bad. Talk about trying to hold it all day so you didn’t have to use one of these!

9. The children are always eager to listen to what you have to say.
