1 Adjectives Adjectives are words used to describe or modify nouns or pronouns. a funny movie They also make the meaning of the noun more specific. a deliberate act

2 They can describe what kind:
We had a cheese pizza. They can explain how many: We own four dogs. What color: He had a blue car. Which one: Several people arrived late.

3 Note that adjectives often (but not always) come before the noun they modify:
We had a cheese pizza. We own four dogs. But, adjectives can come after the noun they modify: The day was sunny and the cool breeze felt nice.

4 Additionally, we often can string a series of adjectives together and still have a grammatically correct sentence: We watched a scary, gory, gruesome movie. His answers were clever, creative, and correct.

5 All articles are always adjectives:
We had a boat. I ate an apple. The speech was long. Sometimes, words can be different parts of speech, depending on how they are used. We had steak for dinner last night. (noun) We had a steak dinner last night. (adj.)

6 Finally, words that look like proper nouns might actually be serving the function of describing some noun: That was Billy’s assignment. That is an American flag. These are called proper adjectives.
