1 Compass REACH Ashley Greaves
Young People’s Nurse

2 How it started… Compass REACH – launched in September 2012
Hailed as an ‘innovative new’ service: Combining substance misuse and sexual health interventions Single provider across North Yorkshire Result – a Nurse led service across the county Prior to 2012 young people’s drug services in North Yorkshire were commissioned district by district – often ‘tagged on’ to existing adult drug services. This resulted in different providers running different contracts in Selby, Skipton, Northallerton, Scarborough… So you had different service delivery models, different KPIs, different staffing models, different opening hours, different waiting times. In other words if could be a ‘postcode lottery’. In 2012 commissioners decided to commission a stand alone young people’s drug service – with a single provider - right across the county. Thus increasing consistency and providing equity across the population of North Yorkshire. Within this they recognised that young people who were taking risks around substance misuse were likely to be taking risks in other areas of their lives….such as sexual health. And so they combined the substance misuse service with sexual health interventions.

3 Healthy Child Service From 1st April 2015 Compass REACH became part of the wider ‘Healthy Child Service’. With this new contract came two significant changes: Age range – 9 –19 years of age (25 with LDs) PLUS, emotional wellbeing and mental health Continued to deliver substance misuse sexual health interventions So we ticked along nicely for about three years and then commissioners decide to recommission the whole of the (what was then) school nursing service across North Yorkshire. They rebadged this as the Healthy Child Service and the targeted element that Compass REACH were already deliver came under this umbrella. So Harrogate District Foundation Trust won the universal (or ‘core’) element of the HCS and Compass won the targeted element of the HCS – this brought with it two significant changes to the contract we were working to: Our age range lowered to age 9 to capture those children who were transitioning form primary school to secondary school as with it this can be a anxiety provoking time. Emotional wellbeing and mental health at a ‘targeted’ early help level was added into the contract. Luckily being a nurse-led model to start with we already had a number of mental health nurses employed on the team and of course, we already delivered a holistic package of care to the young people we worked with on substance misuse issues so were perfectly placed to pick up this additional work on a formal basis.
