STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION APRIL 2016
(SLIDE 1 STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE) Good afternoon fellow Rotarians. It’s an honor to be here to present an update on Rotary International’s Strategic Plan. The rapidly changing environment of the 21st century turned our world into more of a global village. If our global village were made up of 100 people, what would that look like? 22 of the 100 would go without electricity. 23 of the 100 would not have shelter. 17 would not be able to read and write. 13 would have no access to safe water. 68 of the workforce would be under the age of 50. If the world were a village of 100 people, how would Rotary be represented? This, to me, looks like opportunities. Opportunities for membership growth, Opportunities for service, Opportunities for strategically positioning Rotary to engage a changing world. Demands for our time and attention are growing. We are more connected, more distracted and busier than ever before. So how does Rotary keep up? He do we remain relevant? COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION APRIL 2016

Increased financial sustainability and operational effectiveness
Stronger, more effective clubs Greater Visibility and influence Greater impact Increased financial sustainability and operational effectiveness (SLIDE 2 VIRTUOUS CIRCLE) Membership is our single greatest asset… As membership increases, clubs are more vibrant, Rotary has more to show the world, and more resources to help communities, clubs, and RI flourish—all in an environment where people and organizations, don’t have unlimited resources.

ROTARY’S STRATEGIC PLAN
(SLIDE 3 ROTARY’S STRATEGIC PLAN) Our world is changing at an unprecedented rate. It is imperative to look at our relevance and purpose five to ten years down the line. How will we do that? The answer is our Strategic Plan. The plan provides clubs and districts a road map to advance Rotary in communities around world. The strategic plan was developed in 2010 and after review in it remains in place and intact.
4
STRATEGIC PLAN SURVEY RESULTS (MARCH 2014)
STRONG SUPPORT STRATEGIC PLAN SURVEY RESULTS (MARCH 2014) (SLIDE 4 STRONG SUPPORT) In our last survey in 2014, as shown on screen, we found that there is extremely strong support around the Rotary world for the current plan. 96 to 97% of respondents agree that the plan and three priorities are appropriate.
5
RI STRATEGIC PLAN FELLOWSHIP INTEGRITY DIVERSITY SERVICE LEADERSHIP
(SLIDE 5 RI STRATEGIC PLAN) Those three priorities are: supporting and strengthening clubs, focusing and increasing humanitarian service, and enhancing our public image. They are reinforced by our core values: fellowship, integrity, diversity, service, and leadership. So what has RI invested in the plan since the last Council in 2013? Let me summarize just a few key actions taken to support our clubs, our districts, and you…
6
SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN CLUBS
(Slide 6 SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN CLUBS) Keeping Rotary strong, attractive, and relevant starts with supporting and strengthening our clubs. Let’s take a look at how we supported this priority.
7
Regional Membership Plans
Membership Leads (SLIDE 7 REGIONAL MEMBERSHIP PLANS) In 2011, recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to membership, we developed the Regional Membership Plans. In the 4th year of implementing the Regional Membership Plans, we believe the plans are helping maintain our membership levels. (click) We streamlined the membership leads program. It is now easier for prospective members to express their interest in joining Rotary. We’ve also simplified the process for Rotarians who wish to change clubs or make a membership referral. (click) Through Rotary Global Rewards, a Rotary member benefit program, we are providing Rotarians and Rotaractors with discounts and special offers on products and services around the world. Since July 2015, the Rotary Global Rewards has seen over 62,000 unique site visits. Rotary Global Rewards

1 July 2015 Start: 1.209 Million ((SLIDE 8 1 JULY 15 MEMBERSHIP)
Because the Rotary world stood behind membership as a priority and put resources behind it, as of 1 July 2015 Rotary’s global membership was the second highest in history. That is thanks to all of you. Trends are positive for this year so far. But we recognize some regions struggle with membership and the value proposition of staying a member. The data tells us that the problem isn’t attracting people Rotary—For example, last year, clubs brought in over 160 thousand new members.
9
On average, we also lose about 10% of members annually.
(SLIDE 9 LOSING 10%) The problem is keeping them. 133 thousand members left during this past year. We are losing about 10% of our membership on average in the last several years. So—what’s the call to action— Enhancing the Rotary membership experience at the club level is the most significant opportunity to strengthen Rotary overall. Years of research and pilots suggest that giving clubs flexibility can have a positive impact on member attraction, retention and engagement. For Rotary to remain relevant, we must make it a priority to create innovative and flexible membership opportunities.
10
FOCUS AND INCREASE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE
(SLIDE 10 FOCUS AND INCREASE HUMANITARIAN SERVICE) Next, let’s take a look at another strategic plan priority - focusing and increasing humanitarian service.
11
the world discovered Rotary, and Rotarians discovered themselves!”
“… Thanks to PolioPlus, the world discovered Rotary, and Rotarians discovered themselves!” – Kalyan Banerjee (SLIDE 11 THANKS TO POLIOPLUS) In the words of Past RI President Kalyan Banerjee, “thanks to PolioPlus the world discovered Rotary and Rotarians discovered themselves.” The impact of the global mobilization of Rotarians, all working towards a common purpose, cannot be emphasized enough. Because of this worldwide focus, Polio is ever so close to being eradicated, and to date in 2016 we’ve only seen only 9 cases.
12
NEW GRANT MODEL—LAUNCHED JULY 2013
24% Increase in Global Grants (SLIDE 12 NEW GRANT MODEL) In 2013, Rotary introduced a new grant model to simplify and focus on sustainability of Rotary-funded projects. A recent survey shows that 90% of the nearly 6,000 respondents support the model. Grants and funding of grants continues to increase since The Trustees are currently evaluating the model to make absolutely sure we are satisfying clubs and districts in making a greater impact. PREPARING FOR THE CENTENNIAL
(SLIDE 13 PREPARING FOR CENTENNIAL) We are planning for our Foundation’s centennial, marking Rotary’s 100 years of doing good in the world. The celebration kicks off at the 2016 Rotary Convention in Korea and culminates at the 2017 convention in Atlanta. Through the centennial, we will help Rotarians better understand what can be achieved by supporting and using resources available through the Foundation. We also have a chance to show the public the impact our clubs and members make in communities across the globe.
14
ENHANCE PUBLIC IMAGE AND AWARENESS
(SLIDE 14 ENHANCE PUBLIC IMAGE) Let me now highlight the third priority of the RI Strategic Plan – enhancing public image and awareness.
15
(SLIDE 15 WORLD POLIO DAY)
In 2015, we continued to enhance awareness of our work around polio. On World Polio Day in October, we engaged clubs and polio champions. This resulted in reaching 145 million through content shared on social media by clubs, districts, RI, End Polio celebrities and other partner organizations.
16
USE CLUB RESOURCES (SLIDE 16 USE CLUB RESOURCES)
Rotarians now have access to Rotary’s Brand Center. These tools help maintain a clear, cohesive message about what Rotary is, what we do, and why it is important. We’ve also enhanced the branding efforts to align Rotaract and Interact club identities with Rotary’s global brand.
17
(SLIDE 17 GET CONNECTED) And, in helping clubs to promote their activities and connect with others, there’s been a significant effort to “GET CONNECTED”. Tools such as Rotary Showcase help you tell your club’s story and share the impact of your projects. Other products like Rotary Ideas and Discussion Groups are enhancing the Rotary experience.
18
“ If Rotary is to realize its proper destiny, it must be evolutionary at all times, revolutionary on occasion. ” (SLIDE 18 PH QUOTE) You have all seen this quote from Paul Harris. It has never been more relevant than it is today. We’re in an exciting time! The eradication of polio is right around the corner. Please remember we need to stay focused for three full years beyond the last reported case. Paul P. Harris, Founder

OCTOBER 2015 DECISIONS The Board agreed: We must keep up!
We must adapt! We must be prepared! (SLIDE 19 OCTOBER BOARD DECISIONS) In October, both Boards recognized that Rotary must keep up with an ever changing world. The fast-paced nature of our society creates even greater competition for our time, energy and resources. Therefore, as leaders in this organization, our energy must be focused on members having absolute certainty of the benefits and value of being a Rotarian. We must adapt. We must be prepared with a vision that will take Rotary into the next 100 years.
20
BUSINESS/ PROFESSIONAL/ COMMUNITY LEADERS
UNTIL RECENTLY, WE HAVE POSITIONED ROTARY LIKE A HUMANITARIAN SERVICE ORGANIZATION SERVICE BUSINESS/ PROFESSIONAL/ COMMUNITY LEADERS (SLIDE 20 UNTIL RECENTLY…) Until recently, Rotary has positioned itself as a humanitarian organization, focusing less on the importance of membership.
21
TO DISTINGUISH OURSELVES, THE OPPORTUNITY IS IN THE “AND”
BUSINESS/ PROFESSIONAL/ COMMUNITY LEADERS SERVICE AND (SLIDE 21 TO DISTINGUISH) However, we know that what makes Rotary special is in the “and”— We are a membership AND service organization.
22
JOINING LEADERS EXCHANGING IDEAS TAKING ACTION
(SLIDE 22 JOINING LEADERS) Our essence statement is only realized when we bring together leaders to exchange ideas and take action leaving a lasting impact in communities around the world.
23
90% OF RESPONDENTS WANT MORE
Improved training Connecting clubs Planning resources Online tools Leadership development plans Social media training (SLIDE 23 90% OF RESPONDENTS WANT MORE) When we wanted to know what we could do to help you make that impact, we conducted a survey of 65,000 Rotarians and Rotaractors and asked them what they want from RI. What we learned is that 90% of you want more. You want improved training for club and district officers. You want support to connect your club with other clubs. We are doing all that we can to address those wants while also ensuring we are investing in Rotary’s infrastructure to build and maintain a solid foundation for the future. So what does the Future of Rotary look like? We don’t know yet.
24
BUILDING BLOCKS OF OUR FUTURE STRATEGY
MISSION VALUES VISION ESSENCE Our Reason For Being Our Beliefs ? (SLIDE 24 BUILDING BLOCKS) We will look to our mission to guide the next steps, our values to keep true to what makes us Rotary, and a renewed vision to take us into the next 100 years.
25
NEXT GENERATIONS (SLIDE 25 NEXT GENERATION)
What we know now is that we must welcome the next generation of Rotary leaders. They will carry on the Rotarian experience of truly connecting and serving together. Let’s engage all generations through our common values - connecting together to help those in need. So what’s next? What will all of us need to do to keep Rotary relevant in the future? What resources are needed? What are our big dreams? And can we afford to have them?
26
THE IMPACT BEGINS WITH YOU
(Slide 26 THE IMAPCT) (pause) At this moment, YOU have a chance to move us forward. YOU are shaping the future of Rotary. What that future looks like (pause) starts here. With you. You quite literally have, at your fingertips, the potential to shift the future of this organization. So I ask you, vote for the future of Rotary. Vote innovation. Vote flexibility. Use the power of your vote to invest in our future. Invest in the next generation of Rotarians. The impact begins here (pause) with you. Thank you.
