Purpose Deconstruction of the story the Hitch Hiker to illustrate the various literary elements. Include the setting Describe the characters Describe the rising action What is the climax Describe the falling action Resolution

Exposition The story takes place in England. The narrator is driving his BMW to London. On the way he picks up a hitch hiker.

Rising Action-plot development The hitchhiker asks about the drivers occupation. The Driver reveals that hes a writer. The hitchhiker asks the driver to guess his occupation. The driver tries but even with hints cannot guess. The hitch hiker reveals that he is a fingersmith and very good at his job. The driver still cannot guess. The hitch hiker then asks the driver about his fancy BMW and the driver shows off its prowess. The hitch hiker encourages the driver to show how fast the car will go.

Turning Point A police siren sounds and the driver knows that he was about to get a ticket for speeding. The driver gets a ticket and so does his passenger.

Climax Even though they both got tickets there will be no prosecution because the hitchhiker was a pickpocket and stole the ticket books which he and the driver later burned

Resolution They burn the ticket books The driver is relieved The hitch hiker will not be investigated for his nefarious deeds.

Situational irony Because of the profession of the hitch hiker neither of them could be prosecuted. But this is only revealed at the very end.
