1a: compassion or forbearance shown especially to an offender or to one subject to one's power also : lenient or compassionate treatment 2a: a blessing that is an act of divine favor or compassion 3: compassionate treatment of those in distress Hebrew Hesed Greek Eleos “Forgiveness that is not deserved”

3 The Samaritan showed mercy to the man
“Who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:30-37 What was the response of the priest and Levite? Why did the Samaritan help the man? Did he know him? Was he an acquaintance? Did the man owe him money? What is the purpose of the parable? Those that show mercy are like good neighbors The Samaritan was compassionate, even though he did not know the man The Samaritan showed mercy to the man

4 What do these passages tell us about mercy?
Jesus shows mercy John 8:1-11 The woman committed adultery Why did Jesus defend her? Who is without sin? Did Jesus claim her innocence? Was she someone that Jesus knew? Jesus’ response “Go and sin no more” What do these passages tell us about mercy?

Mercy does not take away or forgive our sins Mercy is WHY we get forgiveness Romans 6:12-13, Ephesians 2:1-7 Parable of Pharisee and Tax Collector Luke 18:9-14 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted” We cannot get into Heaven without God’s mercy We have to humble ourselves before God Proverbs 28:13, Romans 12:3
