Panel Members Steve Garets, TEAM OREGON
Stacey “Ax” Axmaker, Motorcycle Safety Systems, LLC Bob Berry, Goldwing Road Riders Association Peter Moe, Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration Brett Robinson, SMSA
4
Top 5 – Steve Garets Technology improvements.
Expansion of mandatory statewide rider education/training. Expanded diversity in rider education and training curriculum, providers and support. Funding challenges. Lane filtering/splitting.

Top 5 – Stacey “Ax” Axmaker
Successfully measure rider training to identify best practices (we can’t manage what we can’t/don’t measure). Address the unintended consequences of the license waiver. New methods content delivery and knowledge assessment. Once we can measure well, be prepared to go where the data takes us. Address the incentives inherent in many state contracts for rider training services.
6
Top 5 – Bob Berry Retraining/continuing education – motorcycle riding proficiency is a perishable skill that must be continually honed through practice. Image enhancement – we can’t be successful with item three if we don’t have the respect of the motoring public. Motorist Awareness – “I didn’t see the bike” is all too common among drivers who cause us pain. Make skill development fun at the club/group/organization level – provide the tools to make that happen. Incorporate technology into training/skill development via the use of simulators/computer driven home exercises and games.
7
Top 5 – Peter Moe Don’t think outside the box; there is no box.
Question everything. Instead of thinking "training," think "experience." Close the loop with Instructors. Make training a part of a system to address motorcycle safety issues.
8
Top 5 – Brett Robinson A strong association of motorcycle safety and rider education/training professionals and stakeholders. License Waiver tied to intermediate skills/training rather than basic skills/training. Reoccurring/refresher (life-long) training [see 4 & 5] and use of technology in training (i.e., online refresher training) Better data collection and research evaluation of rider education and training. Adaptive curriculums based on problem identification data and proven research.
