Candidate Engagement Training!
8 Candidate Engagement Training! The 2018 midterms will present exciting opportunities to engage members of Congress, and ensure new Members learn about our issues before they even get to Washington. There are over 90 open House seats and 7 open Senate seats! There will be many new members to introduce to RESULTS. Don’t wait till January to start advocating the next Congress – get started today! Current Members will also be campaigning – this is a great way to engage them as well. RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

Sample Question: Global
9 Sample Question: Global Request #1: REACH Act (House and Senate) For current members of Congress: Hello! I am _____________, a RESULTS volunteer from ______________. One of the things I am really passionate about is maternal and child heath. Thanks to US leadership, the number of kids who die each year before the age of five has been cut by in half since But there are still 5.9 million kids a year dying of mostly preventable and treatable causes before their 5th birthday. The bipartisan Reach Act would enact key reforms that increase the effectiveness and impact of the U.S. government’s efforts to end preventable child and maternal deaths globally. Will you cosponsor the REACH Act and Ask leadership to pass the bill this year? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

Sample Question: Global
10 Sample Question: Global Request #2: Tuberculosis For current members of Congress: Hello! I am _____________, a RESULTS volunteer from ______________. Tuberculosis is the leading infectious killer in the world. 1.7 million people are killed by TB annually an additional 10 million sickened by this devastating illness. In September, the U.N. will host it's first ever High Level Meeting on Tuberculosis, providing a unique opportunity in the fight to end TB. There is a bipartisan sign on letter to the Administration calling for bold U.S. leadership at the upcoming UN HLM on Tuberculosis. Will you sign on to this letter urging U.S. leadership in the global fight against TB? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
11
Sample Question: Global
11 Sample Question: Global Global Fund For new candidates: My name is _______________ and I am a RESULTS volunteer from ________________. The U.S. partnership with the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has a proven track record of success, saving approximately 22 million lives. We have the opportunity to end these epidemics, supporting millions of people to build healthy, independent, bright futures for themselves and their communities. If elected, will you support fully funding the US one-third share of the Global Fund? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
12
Sample Question: U.S. Poverty
12 Sample Question: U.S. Poverty Request #1: Protect SNAP Many families in our community struggle to put food on the table, and I’m concerned about the House’s partisan Farm Bill which would take food assistance away from 2 million Americans. Rather than taking food away from people looking for work, I urge you to protect and strengthen nutrition assistance. (Briefly mention your own experience and/or why you care about this issue). Request for current member of Congress: Will you tell congressional leaders you oppose any harmful changes or cuts to SNAP and other anti-poverty programs, and that you want the final farm bill to include the Senate’s common sense, bipartisan SNAP policies and protections? Request for candidate: If elected, will you work to strengthen SNAP and oppose efforts to take food and other basic assistance away from working families? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
13
Sample Question: U.S. Poverty
13 Sample Question: U.S. Poverty Request #2: Housing and Closing the Racial Wealth Divide I am deeply concerned about wealth inequality in the United States. Sadly, government policies over our country's history have worsened inequality and created a staggering racial wealth divide. For example, median wealth for white families is 10 times greater than African American families and eight times greater than Hispanic families. Once way to help is by increasing homeownership and access to affordable rental housing. What are your priorities when it comes to increasing access to affordable housing, especially for communities of color? What are your thoughts increasing the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit or Housing Choice Mobility Vouchers? If elected, will you work to enact innovative solutions to reduce racial wealth inequality? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
14
Sample Question: U.S. Poverty
14 Sample Question: U.S. Poverty Request #3: Focus Tax Policy on Working Families As an anti-poverty advocate, I’m concerned about the impact of Congress’s recent tax legislation. We're already seeing higher budget deficits from the 2017 tax law and, as a result, Congress is threatening investments in basic health, nutrition, and education assistance programs. Unpaid-for tax cuts also widen the gap between the wealthy and those struggling to make ends meet. Now Congress is talking about new tax cuts that again would primarily benefit those at the top. Will you oppose any tax legislation that increases the federal budget deficit and threatens programs like Medicaid and SNAP? Instead, will you focus on effective tax policy that helps working Americans, such as expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit? RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

How Do I Find Candidates?
15 How Do I Find Candidates? Sign up for campaign updates on their campaign page This is different than an official government website if your engaging an incumbent Call local campaign offices and local party headquarters and ask when you can hear candidates speak Follow candidates and local political parties on Twitter and Facebook Sign up to engage candidates and RESULTS Staff will be on the look out for events in your area! (mainly current members of Congress) RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

Before You Engage Candidates
16 Before You Engage Candidates Research the candidate and think about how to build common ground with them. Use your new Election Community Mapping Worksheet to help you build connections and leverage power as effectively as possible. Invite new people to attend! The best way to get hooked on RESULTS is to see us in action. Talk to Carly Pildis to get personalized coaching RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

17 Town Hall Tips Arrive early. Ask for extra campaign paraphernalia at the door like stickers. Try to look like a HUGE fan of the candidate. Split up if in a big group. Sit by an aisle towards the front. Think about where it is easy for a candidate to see you and for an aide to hand you a microphone. Wear bright colors that could be easily described by a candidate who is calling on you without knowing your name. Cheer loudly during speech - especially during parts that don’t often get applause. Candidates are more likely to call on friendly, smiling, cheering faces – because they are hoping for positive interactions! RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar

19 Town Hall Tips If called on make sure you say who you are, why you care and ask a yes or no question. Keep it very brief (think 30 seconds) and be sure to mention that you are a RESULTS volunteer! If you don’t get called on head for the handshake line! Hold the candidates hand firmly but politely. Tell them your a RESULTS Volunteer and ask a shortened version of your question. 20 Meet and Greets Meet and greets are informal events where candidates take pictures and chat with potential voters. These can happen at campaign volunteer events or popular local destinations like farmers markets and diners. Use the same strategies you would in a rope line at the Town Hall for a Meet and Greet! Approach the Candidate (you may need to wait in line). Shake their hand and ask a question – don’t let go until you’ve finished talking and they’ve answered. Keep it quick, and make sure you say your name and that you’re a RESULTS Volunteer. RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
21
Building Relationships
21 Building Relationships Don’t head home after talking to candidates – stick around. Introduce yourself to campaign staff. Tell them about yourself and about why you care. Ask if they’d like to meet and talk more about the issues. Chat with potential volunteers. Be available if people ask you about RESULTS and the work your doing. Invite people to attend the next candidate event with you and come to a RESULTS meeting. Introduce yourself to members of the local media. RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
22
Media and Candidate Engagement
22 Media and Candidate Engagement Introduce yourself to members of local media at candidate events. If you read their paper and enjoy the reporters work, tell them (and note that you are local). Thank them for covering the event. Engage them on the issues, tell them you’d love to write an op-ed or provide expert speakers they could talk to if they are interested. Write an LTE about the event and your experience talking to the candidate. When you send in, mention the reporters you met and how you appreciate their work. RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
23
Cautions with Media Engagement
23 Cautions with Media Engagement Many reporters are following a particular candidate or particular race and are expected to write a certain amount about the race regularly. They are looking for a story, and that story might be partisan. Make sure you keep your own comments non-partisan and RESULTS focused. Don’t comment negatively on the size of the event, it’s logistical flaws, or the candidate’s performance. If campaign staff see you in the paper talking negatively about the campaign, they won’t want to engage with you in the future. RESULTS U.S. and Global Poverty National Webinar
24
Elections as a Group Building Tool
24 Elections as a Group Building Tool Candidate engagement is a fun, exciting way to engage new volunteers. Any time your discussing your RESULTS work with a large group of civically engaged citizens at a town hall, it’s an amazing opportunity to invite new members If your volunteering on a campaign, talk to volunteers about the work your doing with RESULTS and how to get involved after the election is over. Start Preparing for the 116th Congress Now
25 Start Preparing for the 116th Congress Now The 116th Congress will have 90 new Members of the House and 7 new Senators even if every incumbent wins their seat!
