We license and regulate marine activities in the seas around England and Wales so that they're carried out in a sustainable way. We’re responsible for: Managing and monitoring fishing fleet sizes and quotas for catches. Ensuring compliance with fisheries regulations, such as fishing vessel licences and quotas for fish and seafood. Managing funding programmes for fisheries activities. Planning and licensing for marine construction, deposits and dredging that may have an environmental, economic or social impact. Making marine nature conservation byelaws. Dealing with marine pollution emergencies, including oil spills. Helping to prevent illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing worldwide. Producing marine plans to include all marine activities, including those we don’t directly regulate. More information about our work is on the GOV.UK website. “The Marine Management Organisation is committed to its staff and believes in investing in their wellbeing and learning and development. We strive to be an Organisation that creates an environment in which staff are able to identify and share good practice, celebrate success and encourage positive attitudes towards diversity.” John Tuckett, CEO Candidate Information Pack

4 ABOUT THE WORK AREA – Marine Licensing
Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s ABOUT THE WORK AREA – Marine Licensing The Marine Licensing teams primary responsibility is to regulate marine licensable activities in English marine and coastal environments. We assess the potential social, environmental and economic impacts of these activities in line with national and international legislation, policy and obligations, using the best available information to make evidence based determinations. Through our work we ensure the activities we regulate are undertaken in a sustainable way, in order to create and maintain clean, healthy, safe and biologically diverse oceans and seas. The marine licensing team is split into three work areas with the following remits: Marine Licensing Casework Team The Marine Licensing Casework Team manages and co-ordinates the delivery of marine licensing pre-application, application and post-consent casework. It also acts as a consultee to the Planning Inspectorate on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. Our work is diverse and we work closely with a range stakeholders to advise and determine marine licensing requirements for developments across multiple sectors, including renewable energy, nuclear, ports and marinas, aggregate dredging, subsea cables, coastal developments, sea defence and wastewater schemes. Strategic Licensing Team The Strategic Licensing Team supports the marine licensing team in a number of key areas as well as being responsible for the Harbour Orders Sector. The team provides advice and support on the most complex and contentious cases, oversees and plans the training framework for the wider team, leads on external engagement with other government departments and liaison with other non government organisations. The strategic team also manages the licensing teams relationship with scientific advisors The Centre for Environment, Fisheries, Aquaculture and Science. Marine Licensing Business Improvement The Marine Licensing Business Improvement team supports the delivery of the marine licensing service through the continual improvement of business process, procedures and systems. This ensures that the marine licensing functions are as efficient as possible in order to minimise burdens on applicants whilst supporting our team to regulate marine licensing activities. The team manages a programme of change projects, oversees the programme of internal audit, and responds appropriately to audit findings and customer feedback. Candidate Information Pack

5 CASE STUDY – Marine Licensing Case Manager – Ed Walker
Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s CASE STUDY – Marine Licensing Case Manager – Ed Walker “I moved to the MMO in October 2016 and am currently a Case Manager within the Coastal Energy Sector of the Marine Licensing Team. Before working for the MMO, I worked for a Renewable Energy Consultancy in Northumberland for 2.5 years. Before this, I worked for an Aberdeen-based Environmental Company operating to manage and reduce the operational environmental impacts arising from our portfolio of Oil and Gas clients such as BP, Maersk FSPO’s and Shell. I now work to regulate Coastal Energy schemes which have an interaction with the marine environment. This varies but common themes are intake and outfall structures for cooling water systems, jetty structures for construction access and seawall protection (e.g. for vulnerable coastal sites). Some notable projects that I am currently working on include the new Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station on the South East Coast and the Drax Repower Project which involves the conversion of the existing power station to a new low-carbon generating station. For me, one of the best things about the role is being part of decisions that are made for some of the UK's most significant infrastructure being currently proposed. Aside from this, the sheer variety of work and opportunity is unparalleled; outside of Coastal Energy work, I have had the opportunity to work on some of the Round 2 Offshore Wind Farms which the MMO are also involved with regulating. Over and above the unique opportunities above, the development support for Professional Membership (such as IEMA), flexible working hours policy, a generous annual leave allowance and extremely positive atmosphere across the team make the MMO a really attractive place to work.” Candidate Information Pack

6 CASE STUDY – Marine Licensing Case Officer – Kat Mongan
Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s CASE STUDY – Marine Licensing Case Officer – Kat Mongan I joined the MMO in 2012 following 11 years in Corporate IT with the DWP; my main ‘qualifications’ being experience working on large projects and an interest in the environment. Not having a marine background hasn’t held me back at the MMO though and since joining I’ve worked on a range of projects across a variety of marine sectors, from offshore wind to flood defence. For me, the best thing about my work is the sheer variety of projects I get involved with and the people I work with. The MMO has attracted people from a wide range of backgrounds and interests; there is a wealth of individual knowledge in the team and everyone is always willing and happy to share that knowledge and experience. Working for the MMO also allows me to get out from behind my desk occasionally to meet the people we are providing a service for. There are also opportunities to engage with industry at conferences, exhibitions, workshops and meetings anywhere from London to Glasgow and everywhere in-between. The MMO can be a challenging but rewarding place to work, especially when you can see the results of the work you’ve done and be confident that you’ve contributed to protecting the environment whist enabling sustainable development.
