Types of academic texts
TEXT TYPE DESCRIPTION 1. JOURNAL ARTICLE a long academic text that involves personal research, written by a candidate for a university degree. 2. CONFERENCE PAPER b) condenses the main points of a source academic text 3. THESIS / DISSERTATION c) written by scholars and/ of experts in particular fields; contain latest research; peer-reviewed and may review multiple review phrases 3. SUMMARY d) Condenses the main points of a source academic text and includes additional explanation / opinion about the source text 4. ESSAY e) published in proceedings after a scientific gathering where its was presented orally; includes a fixed review schedule 5. ANNOTATION f) has various purposes, e.g. to describe, compare, contrast, persuade (for or against sth), defend, etc. A thesis is a compilation of research that proves you are knowledgeable about the information learn throughout your graduate program. A dissertation is your opportunity during a doctorate program to contribute new knowledge, theories or practices to your field. The point is to come up with an entirely new concept, develop it and defend its worth.
