I. Background A) Containment - stopping the expansion of communism
B) Japan - Like Germany, we begin rebuilding our old enemy General Douglas MacArthur - oversees USA occupation of Japan Japanese swear off war in exchange for USA’s Protection Now Japan puts all $$$ into industry (works well)

III. Korean War BIG PICTURE: 1950-1953 Humans:
33,000 US Soldiers Killed, 100,000 wounded 4,000,000 Chinese/Koreans killed/wounded Kim Il Sung (North) vs. Syngman Rhee (South) North invades South in 1950 Truman believes that N is supported by Russia USA believes Communism spreads to Japan if S Korea defeated ***Truman gets authorization to fight from he United Nations not Congress*** Truman convinces Congress that US is only leading “UN Police Action” and that this is “not a war”

IV. How Korean War went down
A) Douglas MacArthur - leads “police force” with S Korean forces, driving back N Korea to dividing line Tries to unite Korea but disobeys Truman by getting too close to China B) China gets involved - killing many Americans MacArthur demands use of Atomic bomb against China China and Russia are allies - would cause WWIII Truman does not want world to end, instead Fires MacArthur C) Eventually, US threatens use of Atomic Bomb against Korea to get N Korea to sign Armistice War is still not over Americans still stationed in Korea today just in case

Vietnam overshadows it First war involving USA after WWII Today: China is still communist Korea is still divided Japan & S Korea are still close allies These events set the stage for The Vietnam War (later)
