5. Prophet Muhammad dies in 632
Muhammad’s father-in-law Abu Bakr becomes caliph (successor)
4 Caliphs:
Abu Bakr
Umar ibn al-Khattab
Uthman ibn Affan
Ali ibn Abi Talib
Caliph Ali murdered by Umayyad family in 661. Umayyads gain power and rule from
Rebel group named Abbasids overthrew Umayyads in 750. They killed every member of the Umayyad they could find.
Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman fled to Spain in 755 & founded the Umayyad dynasty, and established an independent state called al-Andalus in Cordoba.
MUSLIM SPAIN
Abd al-Rahman III assumed power in 912. He fought off rebel Arab leaders and preserved Umayyad power in Spain. He united all of Muslim Spain under his rule by 933.
