Standard I can determine what causes objects to speed up, slow down or change direction Entry Task Update Table of contents: Pg. 14 – Cross cutting concepts Pg. 15 – Learning Reflection Learning Target How have we learned? How have we connected to our learning? At home None

Cross cutting concepts
Frames of reference scientists use to understand the world What we learn about the world depends on our Frame of Reference

Now Read through the list to get familiar with the ways in which the frame of reference has been used in class

6
Patterns and Trends In the “Mass vs. Distance the block moves” lab we found patterns in data to see that more mass had more kinetic energy
7
Now Read through the list to get familiar with the ways in which the frame of reference has been used in class Think of at least 4 activities we have done in class and how we have used frame of reference to gain our understanding.

If you were absent yesterday…
Come to the front of the room to work on an analysis
9
Faster speed Slower speed

Scientific Principles…
Energy that enables your car to move is transferred from the person that launches it Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it transfers or transforms Potential energy can be changed by changing the position or condition of the object Changing the position or condition of mousetrap car parts will have a dramatic effect on performance Potential Energy An object will maintain its motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force Unbalanced forces will cause your car to speed up, slow down or turn – control them Newton’s 1st law

P – Possible causes (control variables)
P – Patterns and trends O – Outliers P – Possible causes (control variables) L- Limitations (What your data cannot show) Analysis: Our data shows that different surfaces cause different speeds. There was no outliers our data, but the time might have been incorrect because the ball curved. This experiment was limited because we only tested one type of ball Analysis: Our data shows that different surfaces cause different speeds. There was an outlier in trial 3 on the concrete surface because the speed was way faster than the other speeds. We think this was because the person timing stopped the timer too soon. This experiment was limited because we only tested one type of ball on the surfaces. 36 37

Now… for the next 10 minutes…
Write your analysis (use your guidelines on pg 8) Get as many cross-cutting concepts done as you can Be ready to share with the class

Cross Cutting Concept How we used the crosscutting concept
On a post-it Example Cross Cutting Concept How we used the crosscutting concept Patterns In the “Mass vs. Distance the block moves” lab we found patterns in data to see that more mass had more kinetic energy
