2. The Mulberry Bush, St Martins Circus, Birmingham
The Mulberry Bush Public House was situated at the bottom of the Rotunda building in St Martins Circus on the junction with Worcester Street.
Ten people lost their lives as a result of the explosion in the Mulberry Bush on 21 November There were numerous non-fatal casualties, many of whom suffered life changing injuries.
This presentation will attempt to show where some of the deceased were located within the Mulberry Bush prior to the explosion as referred to in survivors’ witness statements
There is no witness evidence available to show the location of the bodies of the deceased after the explosion with the exception of the victims Paul DAVIES and Neil MARSH, who were believed to have been outside, walking past the premises, when the explosion occurred.

The licensee's wife, Mary Jones, who was serving behind the bar, states the following regulars James CADDICK, John Clifford JONES, John ROWLANDS, Stanley BODMAN and Michael BEASLEY
were together at the bar near to the serving hatch just seconds before the explosion.
All were standing except for Stanley BODMAN who was sitting on a stool.

The witness
Derek BLAKE states that his girlfriend, Pamela Palmer sat with her back to the wall facing the juke box whilst he was ordering their drinks at the bar near to the pillar. He turned to walk towards her when the explosion occurred.

Barman Alan Clive JONES was serving Trevor THRUPP at the bar by the pillar when the explosion occurred. He states the stairs collapsed and fell onto Trevor THRUPP.

14. Tavern In The Town, New Street, Birmingham
After the explosion at The Mulberry Bush, a further explosion occurred at the Tavern in the Town. The Tavern In The Town was located below ground level on New Street beneath King Edward House.
Eleven people lost their lives as a result of this explosion. There were numerous non-fatal casualties, many of whom suffered life changing injuries.
This presentation will attempt to show where some of the deceased were located within the Tavern In The Town prior to the explosion as referred to in survivors witness statements.
There is no witness evidence available to show the exact location of the bodies of the deceased after the explosion but an approximate location can be provided for some of the victims.

talking to a friend (probably Jane DAVIS) and joined them at the location shown (approximately) on this slide. He left their company just after 20:15hrs.

The witness, Gaynor SHAP arrived at the Tavern In The Town in the company of Eugene REILLY at approx. 19:50hrs and both stood by the bar near to the juke box.
Mrs SHAP went outside to meet a friend, and returned to the Juke Box area of the bar at approx. 20:00hrs. At that time Eugene REILLY was still by the bar near the juke box.
Mrs SHAP was leaving the premises and was on the stairs up to New Street when the explosion occurred.

The witness, Paul MURPHY initially saw Jane DAVIS in the company of another female (probably Maxine HAMBLETON) whilst he was at the bar.
He watched Jane and her friend walk away from the bar and sit in the seating area under the stairs. Jane and her friend sat on the bench seat facing the bar.
Mr MURPHY was by the first pillar when the explosion occurred.

The witness, Elizabeth SANDERS entered the Tavern In The Town at approx. 20:20hrs with her boyfriend James CRAIG
She sat down under the stairs on the bench facing New Street whilst James went to the bar. James returned with their drinks and sat on her right side. After about five minutes the explosion occurred.

The witness, John FLOREY entered the Tavern In The Town sometime after 20:00hrs.
He saw and briefly acknowledged Eugene REILLY and Desmond REILLY who were both sitting in an alcove which he describes as being to the right of the stairs.
The witness, Janet GILLESPIE entered the Tavern In The Town sometime after 20:00hrs with Maureen ROBERTS.
They purchased drinks at the bar and sat in the seating under the stairs. Ms GILLESPIE was sitting on a bench seat with Maureen ROBERTS on her left at the time of the explosion.

Ambulance man, Michael PACKER attended the Tavern in the Town after the explosion and recovered two females from under the rubble to the right of the bottom of the stairs.
They were later identified as Maxine HAMBLETON and Anne HAYES.
There are no statements of evidence to support the location of Anne HAYES within the Tavern In The Town before the explosion.
Ambulance driver, Peter GOODSHIP attended at the Tavern in the Town after the explosion and recovered a male and a female from an alcove to the right of the bottom of the stairs.
They were later identified as Jane DAVIS and Eugene REILLY.

26. Tavern In The Town, New Street, Birmingham
The jury will hear evidence about the location of Thomas CHAYTOR.
There are no statements of evidence to support the location of Marilyn NASH within the Tavern In The Town before the explosion. She was believed to be meeting friends including Anne HAYES, Maxine HAMBLETON and Jane DAVIS. An ambulance driver, Janet TAYLOR, subsequently transported Marilyn NASH to hospital after she had been removed form the Tavern in the Town.
There are no statements of evidence to support where James CRAIG was found following the explosion or how he was removed from the Tavern In The Town.
There are no statements of evidence to support where Desmond REILLY was found following the explosion.

27. Tavern In The Town, New Street, Birmingham
There are no statements of evidence to support the location of Stephen WHALLEY and Lynn BENNETT within the Tavern In The Town before the explosion. They had gone to Birmingham to meet each other for the first time on a blind date.
Ambulance driver, Kenneth ATKINSON attended at the Tavern in the Town after the explosion. He took responsibility for a male who had already been removed from the debris and took him to the Birmingham General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. That male was later identified as Stephen WHALLEY.
The jury will hear evidence from Police Constable Michael JUCHNOWICZ about Lynn BENNETT, who appears to have been removed from the Tavern in the Town in the early hours of the morning of 22 November 1974.

After the explosion ambulance driver Bernard SLATER took responsibility for a female who had already been removed from the debris of the Tavern In The Town and took her to the Birmingham Accident Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
She was later identified as Maureen ROBERTS.
