1
Crisis What it be? By Nicole Gerzon and Michelle Surets
2
A VERY General Summary Continuously changing committee
Small solutions to a larger problem Advancing your own position while working for your committee Small room Backroom notes and creativity
3
Crisis vs. GA Representing a person Directives & Notes Backroom!!!!!
Controlling a room Interpersonal skills and adaptability manipulation Adaptability Representing a country Resolutions, working papers etc…. Controlling a bloc Heavy research and power (sneaky power del moves) S t a g n a t i o n
4
Representing a Person Getting into character Building a crisis arc
Keeping within historical context and realistic arcs Your chairs will probably specialize in the topic Get yourself some new powers - but don’t go overboard with fun mun Get yourself some friends (or just make them up) Research? (w/ a couple caveats)
5
Small Rooms An emphasis on interpersonal relationships
But, you also have more personal power People talk a lot more- have a lot to talk about, ALWAYS even if it’s trivial you gotta talk Asserting yourself
6
Prepping for Committee
the right way - aka don’t overdo it
7
Research Absolute Must! Maybe…. Historical context
Personal position and rough idea of your powers Committee Background Possible Arcs MAPS Maybe…. Your other committee members Your chair’s background on the topic Past precedence
8
After Research... Make a crisis arc! Or don’t
Come up with a couple of things you want to do and how you’ll get there Plan for different events (if ___ gets shot down by crisis, I’ll do ___) Or don’t Get an idea for where you wanna go and bounce ideas off of others for how to get there Use the minds of your teammates - it’s a cooperative sport Go into committee open minded and ready to do research after the session
9
The First Impression In a small room - you’re gonna get judged harshly
Assert yourself, but be nice Don’t go right into committee talk There’s like 15 of you - don’t worry you’ll get to it Be comfortable - share things about yourself and DON’T STRESS If they trust you as a person - they’ll trust you as any character
11
Get ready to be disappointed
In Committee Get ready to be disappointed
12
Stuff You Can Expect Round Robins Moderated Caucuses
No more speaker’s lists! Short frequent unmods Learning how to lie well. Within your character guidelines not be a sneaky person ADAPTABILITY
13
Mini Resolutions- but not quite
Directives Mini Resolutions- but not quite Committee wide Openly passed laws and responses to crises Don’t be the guy that only writes press releases Usually no longer than a page No flowery language: get to the point Requires a majority vote to pass ADAPTABILITY
14
Crisis Notes Unless you choose to disclose it, this is a private source of communication with the crisis staff Use it to do things that only you can do Advance your arc Influence the overall committee Joint Notes - the ultimate power moves ADAPTABILITY
15
It’s a lot. This will be covered in more detail because there is truly a lot of information The most important thing you can do in a crisis is be active Don’t burn out and pace yourself Especially during the midnight crises TALK - WRITE - TALK - WRITE (etc…) No one is judged on one session Keep your eyes on the bigger picture
16
HAHA it’s very peaceful unless you procrastinate like me
After Committee HAHA it’s very peaceful unless you procrastinate like me
17
Things To Do Usually no morning meetings
Researching possible arc continuations Writing notes and directives from before Not prewriting - only after the conference has started CRISIS BRUNCH! Go to the zoo with your friends!!
