Bicycle Safety Presented to Mount Vernon Recyclers and Friends

2 The Rules of The Road Cyclist are considered vehicles under Florida Law and must obey all traffic controls and signals. ( Yes that says ALL) Use arm and voice signals to indicate intended movements and warn of approaching hazards. (Very important when riding with others. Things like pot holes or debris in the road could cause a person behind you to fall.) Bikes are allowed 3 feet from edge of pavement or any obstacle. (Note that’s pavement not the curb.) When riding on sidewalks or in crosswalks cyclists must yield the right- of- way to pedestrians and give an audible signal when passing on the left.

3 The Rules of The Road Ride single file, if possible, to avoid possible collisions with other trail users. ( Use Common Sense in other words) This applies anywhere you are riding: a trail, sidewalk, road etc. If you can not see very far ahead of you for any reason be single file. You should never ride more than two abreast. (Sometimes you may need to take control of the lane.) Explain! When crossing or entering any street or road do so at an intersection. Use center islands to your advantage they offer you some protection from passing traffic. (Like Manatee Ave.) Always be aware of what is going on behind you. Always ride with traffic!

4 Always Be aware of your Surroundings!

5 The Rules of the Road When riding on any sidewalk when at an intersection do not rely on drivers seeing you. Often times drivers look right past you without seeing you. They are focused on cars on the road way. When crossing draw bridges I do not recommend riding on the grated road. They tend to be very smooth and can be very slippery even when dry. I prefer to use the sidewalk.

6 The Rules of the Road Always wear a current helmet it may just save your life or lessen the extent of injury. All persons under 16 must wear a helmet by Florida Law. Headsets, earbuds or other listening devises other than a hearing aid are prohibited when riding. Headlight and taillight are required for operation of a bicycle from dust to dawn. ( A big plus during daylight also.) Think of what you see first of an approaching motorcycle it’s the headlight.

7 Things to consider before the Ride
Carry personal identification with an emergency number. Ideally the emergency number is someone local. I also recommend you carry your medical insurance card. And if you have any special medical needs it is good to have that available also. Check helmet for cracks, make sure the chin strap is adjusted properly Make sure handlebars are secure. Make sure the pedals are secure and turn free. Make sure the chain is free with no kinks in it.

8 Things to consider before the Ride
Make sure the quick releases on the wheels are secure. Confirm that both front and rear brakes are working! Confirm that the seat is secure and adjusted for you. Check tires for cracks and inflated within the range marked on the sidewall of the tire. Under inflated tires make for more work to pedal and also tend to puncture more often. Under inflated tires tend to get pinch flats. Water bottle, cell phone. Have contact number under ICE or home.

9 The Rules of the Road Thank you for your time I hope this has been helpful in someway. Remember be alert and be safe!
