L , RL Monday, March 18th, 2019 Aim: How can we expand our vocabulary knowledge through context clues and sentence completion? Objective: Students will be able to decipher the meaning of unknown words by looking at the context in which they are being used. Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) Describe the relationship between Romeo and Benvolio? OR 2.) Which characters in the first scene seem to have a greater importance than others? What makes you say this?

Objective: Students will be able to decipher the meaning of unknown words by looking at the context in which they are being used. Agenda 1.) Do Now: Answer one or both questions, turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will share with the class. 2.) Mini-Lesson: Vocabulary Lesson on words we will find throughout Act 1 and starting Act 1, Scene 2. 4.) Reflection: How will the introduction of Paris affect the course of events? What can you predict will happen next in the play?

3 Vain (Adjective) Rebecca is so vain that she is unable to walk past a mirror without stopping to stare at herself. The compliments Peter would constantly receive got to his head and made him vain. Vain most likely means: having or showing undue or excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements

4 Purge (Verb) After he walked in on his parents making out, Kevin vowed that he would do whatever it took to purge the image from his brain. Veronica was determined to purge her house of any items that she didn’t absolutely need after watching a show about hoarders. Purge most likely means: rid (someone or something) of an unwanted quality, condition, or feeling

5 Discreet (adjective) Hoping to avoid getting caught, the shoplifter tried to be discreet while walking through the store. The married politician needed to keep his affair discreet and hidden. Discreet most likely means: not attracting attention, careful in what you say or do

6 Mercurial (Adjective)
While my uncle is as predictable as the sunrise, my aunt is very mercurial. Due to Mary taking a new medication, her moods have become quite mercurial and change with the wind. Mercurial means: subject to sudden or unpredictable changes in mood

7 Reverence (Noun) People usually hold an attitude of reverence towards the veterans and honor their sacrifice. The knights showed reverence towards their king by bowing before him. We can assume the definition of reverence is: deep respect for someone or something.

8 Bound (Adjective) Timothy was bound by the terms of the contract he had signed. The criminals bounded my arms and legs with rope leaving me unable to move. Since I did not study, I was bound to fail my test. We can infer that “bound” means: tied down, obligated, or destined to happen

9 Forfeit (Verb) The team didn't have enough players, so they ended up having to forfeit the game. James was told to forfeit all contact with convicted felons if he did not want to violate the terms of his parole. Forfeit means: To lose or be deprived of something

10 Chaste (Adjective) The priest took an oath to avoid impure temptations in order to live a chaste life. Jenny is very religious, so she told her boyfriend they could do nothing more than exchange chaste kisses. Chaste means: not being sexual in nature or intention Abstaining from extramarital or all sexual intercouse

11 Nimble (Adjective) quick and light in motion, agile
The overweight police officer could not chase after and catch the nimble suspect. The guitarist was amazing, and my eyes couldn’t keep up as his fingers plucked the strings with nimble strokes. Nimble means: quick and light in motion, agile

12 Obscure (Adjective) No one knows much about Austin, so details of his life remain obscure. The lighting in the room is terrible, making it too obscure for reading. Obscure means: Dark, hidden, unclear, not easily understood or known

13 Due Wednesday, March 20th:
Compose flashcards for all of the vocabulary words. Create on index cards, loose leaf or an electronic device. Write the vocabulary word and part of speech (noun, verb, adjective or adverb) on the front of the card. Write the definition and an original sentence on the back.

14 Act 1 Scene 2 We’ve learned about various little story lines developing throughout the text. We have the family feud between the Capulets and Montagues as well as Romeo’s unrequited love. What did we learn from the conversation between Paris and Lord Capulet? We learn that Paris wants to marry Juliet. How does Lord Capulet feel about this? Let’s summarize what happens between Benvolio, Romeo, and Peter. Since Peter cannot read he gives Romeo the document which turns out to be an invitation to guests attending a party at the Capulets. The servant, unaware of Romeo being a Montague, invites him to the party. Why will Romeo take up the chance of attending the party at the Capulet house despite being a Montague? The woman he loves (Rosaline) is on the guestlist.
