Long term research Maintaining Poor Pavements, Phase 1 Project Summary: The objective of this project is to identify performance improvements that can be expected for Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) roadways, from the application of a variety of thin pavement rehabilitation treatments similar to and including thin lift overlays, fine graded HMA scratch course with a chip seal, mastic surface correction for cupped cracks with a chip seal, microsurfacing, scrub seals, etc. From the Preventive Maintenance , home page, click on links to all the project web pages.

Long term research Effective Long Lasting Partial Depth Joint Repairs for Challenging Conditions, Phase 1 Project Summary: As Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements age, longitudinal and transverse joints can exhibit signs of distress as a result of traffic loading, climatic variations, materials related issues, and construction defects. Although only small areas are often involved, the joint distress can substantially disrupt traffic flow and increase pavement roughness sacrificing consumer ride comfort. Furthermore, secondary distresses and degradation of otherwise sound concrete can occur due to poor joint conditions.

Short term synthesis Pavement preservation approaches for lightly surfaced roads Options for local agencies to preserve roads that meet the unique requirements of low volume roadways. Address roadways surfaced with aggregates, thin PCC, stabilized RAP, including both engineered emulsion and foamed asphalt. Needs to be better scoped by the PM team.

PHASE II Spray on Rejuvenator SYNTHESIS Project Summary: A synthesis on field projects constructed to evaluate spray on rejuvenators, by NRRA members, NCAT, NCHRP, MN cities and counties, and others. Also include all recent research projects by MO DOT with ARA. The final report should read as a work plan for the rejuvenator test sections. Include products to tests, tests to run, frequencies, etc.

Long term research PHASE II Spray on Rejuvenator Test Sections Project Summary: A very detailed study of spray applied rejuvenators on a newer HMA pavement. Testing will include friction, pavement marking reflectivity, and other tests (tbd) to study the effect of the products. This is expected to require a significant amount of hours. Traffic control and testing will be the responsibility of the research team. The research team will plan and coordinate all aspects of the product installation. Due to the number of products that may be included and the desire to apply them to newer pavements, this study will likely not be at MnROAD. 500’ sections are desired.

PHASE II Service Life Enhancement of Substrates Overlaid with Thin Overlays (UTWBC, Chip Seals & Microsurfacing) for each state STUDY Project Summary: Whereas the use of thin overlays as preventive maintenance and other strategies have intensified in recent years, very little about the life-extensions that these fixes impart on their various substrates have been tenably quantified. Additionally, variability in life-extensions with respect to the design and condition of various substrates as well as timing of their intervention also need to be determined. In an investment scenario, agencies need to know what enhancements in service lives and changes in failure-modes (if any) are derivable from these fixes to improve informed institutional decision process pertaining to their usage. This small scale analytic project should not exceed 3 months and an estimated cost of $20,000 since raw data is already available.
