This term we have number of exciting events happening in school:
ENGLISH As Writers, we shall begin our term by reading ‘Iggy Peck Architect’ by Andrea Beaty and imagining that we are engineers by designing a ‘new-improved’ house for the three little pigs, and writing instructions to build it. Later in the term we shall read a second book by the same author ‘Rosie Revere Engineer’. We shall focus on the life, work and experiences of Isambard Kingdom Brunel to design and build our own bridge. We shall also write letters and diary entries in role as the famous engineer himself. MATHEMATICS As Mathematicians, we will continue to use our knowledge to measure and record the height of plants and the capacity of water. We shall also be measuring and comparing the heights and length of our own beanstalks linked to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Later in the term, we shall use our directional knowledge to plot a path for the SS Great Britain similar to that which it sailed from Liverpool to New York on July 26th, 1845. READING As Readers, we will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our topic. We will focus on answering questions linked to what we have read. Build it! Year 2 Term 5 P.E (Wednesdays) As Athletes, we will be learning techniques and skills to improve our athleticism. We shall be running, jumping, throwing and hopping. We will practice quick reactions and rapid acceleration. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit including trainers as most sessions will be outside. COMPUTING As Computer technicians, we will use a range of tools in a paint program to mix colour and create pictures and repeating patterns. We shall plan and take digital images considering framing of the image. We shall write sentences with a word processing program using shift and caps lock for capitals and changing the font style, size and colour. Children will be able to retrieve their documents and edit and add to them using arrow keys to move around text and backspace and delete to correct text. HISTORY As Historians, we will learn about the significant British monarchs in history, and give a more in-depth study of Richard III as well as asking the children to draw comparisons between Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. We will consolidate the children's awareness of the past and significant individuals through using timelines and making comparisons between various periods in history. SCIENCE As Scientists, we shall continue to learn about plants. We shall plant a seed and a bulb and compare them as they grow. We will set up a comparative experiment to observe what plants need to grow well, and watch the germination process first hand by growing our own grass heads. DT As Designers, we will learn about the structure and design of bridges from across the world. We shall focus on Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the Clifton Suspension bridge We shall then design and make our own bridge using a suspension bridge design. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As Spiritualists, we shall ask ‘How can we learn from sacred books?’ We shall recognise that sacred texts contain stories which are special to many people and should be treated with respect. GEOGRAPHY As Geographers, we will develop key map skills. We will use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of the school and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.
