Standards based- rigorous, high level, created by teachers, scored by teachers Performance-based-assessment embedded in your practice Evidenced based : Component Evidence Component One Assessment test of content knowledge Component Two- Differentiation Student work (Video for Music) Component Three- Learning Environment Two short videos Component Four- Reflective Effective Practitioner Student work, assessments, evidence of professional learning Don’t go into a lot of detail here!

7 Eligibility Bachelor’s degree Three years of teaching/ counseling
Valid state or school counseling license (or you have taught where a license is not required and the school is approved by the state Questions about eligibility call (800) 22-TEACH

9 Five Core Propositions This is Me!
Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and learning Proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to their students Proposition 3: Teachers are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning. Proposition 4: Teachers Think Systematically about Their Practice and Learn from Experience. Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Learning Communities. NBCTs are dedicated to making knowledge available for all students. They believe all students can learn. They treat students equitably. NBCTs understand how students learn. They respect the cultures and family differences They’re concerned with their students’ self concept NBCTs are also concerned with developing character and civic responsibility We will reflect on our practice later. Read the handout, move around and add to the charts. Introduce yourself to people at the chart you on.

10 Four Components Seeing Your Practice
Three years $475 each May complete in any order May skip a year Don’t have to be taken in order.

11 Component 1: Content Knowledge
Computerized, testing Center, 45 selected response Items,3- 30 minutes constructed response prompts. We practice the exercises, creating prompts, and share study materials.

12 Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction
Show how you analyze student work and modify instruction to increase student learning. Involves pages of writing. Our support includes learning how to: Use protocols for looking at student work Use effective goal-setting to align with student needs Use assessments to inform instruction. Equity and knowledge of student- use Spheres of Success

13 Thinking like a National Board candidate
Think of a lesson you recently taught and describe it. Discuss these points with a partner (5 minutes for each sharing partner) Explain the goal and why it was important Describe the instructional strategies you used and why. Were your students successful? How do you know? Share a challenge of the lesson Now we will look at the Architecture of Accomplished Teaching and see if you can track your lesson.

14 Now go back to your writing about your lesson and see if you can track its progress on the AAT. Discuss with a new partner. What strikes you when you see this? Is there anything new or something you don’t undestand?

15 Component 3: Teaching Practice & Learning Environment
Two short videos that show evidence of how you create a learning environment and make instructional decisions that increase student learning. 11-13 pages of writing Stanford’s program involves learning how to: analyze video set goals aligned with student needs use assessments that inform instruction Focus on equity Equity and Knowledge of Student- Share Spheres of Success

16 Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner
Involves showing evidence of how you Gather information about students Develop effective assessments to inform instruction Impact student learning in your professional development, leadership, and/or working with families and the community Stanford’s program involves collaboration around: effective assessments strategies for collecting student information Using professional development to meet student needs Assessment standard

17 What is National Board Writing?
Description, Analysis, and Reflection Read the writing to see if you can determine the three types of writing. Discuss what you have found with the people around you.

18 Certificate Areas/ Standards
25 certificate areas , many with specific age ranges, Show website nbpots.org and see who is here from each certificate group. General Portfolio Instructions is where the writing sample is from.

19 Assessment Cycle From Guide to National Board Certification

20 What Support is Available at Stanford?
Time Guidance Collaboration 10+ Saturdays Mentored with NBCT facilitators Work in groups to read each other’s work, share ideas Cost: $425 each year Includes cost of up to 10 continuing education quarter units EACH year.
