What is Manifest Destiny?
Manifest Destiny is having control over the whole territory or from Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Helped provide political support for territorial expansion.

Key Terms Tariff of Protective measure passed by Congressional Whigs raising tariffs to pre-Compromise of 1833 rates Fifty-four forty or fight- Slogan adopted by expansionist who advocated the occupation of Oregon Territory Liberty Party-Antislavery party that ran in the election before merging with the Free Soil wanted to abolish slavery but holt to slow rates Walker Tariff- Revenue-enhancing that lower tariffs from 1842 that increase trade California Bear Flag Republic- Local American Settlers that revolted against the Mexico Conscience Whigs- Northern Whigs who apposed slavery on moral grounds wanted to prevent Annexation of Texas as a slave state

Oh American Indians There were many conflicts between soldiers and settlers and the Indians Trail of Tears- tribes that were forcibly relocated from the Atlantic coast states to Oklahoma They were forcibly removed from their native lands

Texas was once a part of Mexico Mexico persuaded them to settle by offering cheaper land Mexico wanted them to serve as a barrier between Commanche and Apache Raiders

Possible annexation in 1837 North does not want another slave state admitted to the Union Texas becomes “lone star republic” ( ) Stephen Austin sold a lot of Texas because it was cheap for settlers to go there Discrimination of Tejanos Spirit of Revenge against Mexicans or descendendts Tejano’s land were taken They were pushed out of Texas

Texas Annexation 1844 Election
Henry Clay (Whig) v. James K. Polk (Democrat) Polk wins and calls for annexation of Texas Mexico whom claimed Texas, considered this war Congress agreed to admit Texas to the Union Polk orders Taylor and the troops to the Rio Grande John Slidell sent Mexico to establish the Rio Grande as the border Mexico was angered and ended negotiations Polk orders to seek deeper into disputed territory

Treaty of Guadalupe- Hidalgo Mexico gave all claims to Texas known as the Mexican Cession (CA, NV, AZ, UT, CO, NM) US Paid Mexico $15 Million Full Citizens granted to Mexicans Gadsden Purchase 1853 Gadsden made a deal with Mexico to purchase land south of the Gila River $10 Million US gained all land north of the Rio Grande Manifest Destiny was achieved by U.S. had all of the territories it has today
