1 Story of Albrect Durer and Franz Kingstein

2 1 John 3 v 16-18 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

3 LOVE IN ACTION Luke 10v25-37 Choice of Lifestyle?

4 Introduction:. 1. Context of Jesus answering question
Introduction: Context of Jesus answering question Lawyer – knows the law – loves debating Setting of the Parable Road: Jerusalem to Jericho - dangerous Challenge thrown out by Jesus Know God’s ways and Do them

5 INCREDIBLE LIFE & DEATH OF CHRIST
Virtue of LOVE and COMPASSION Regard for, and devotion to the interest of others - Neighbour? Anyone who lies in need at life’s roadside! 1. UNIVERSAL Love ‘a certain man’: any race, culture, background, type not just your own ‘group’ or ‘tribe’ look beyond external ‘accidents’ to common ‘humanity’ 2. COSTLY, RISKY Love unknown situation – priest & levite busy or fearful? questions: ‘what will happen to me?’ ‘what will happen to him?’ risks position, prestige & even life for welfare of others 3. EXTRAVAGANT, EXCESSIVE Love he got his hands dirty! True sympathy & compassion ‘acts’ goes far beyond ‘call of duty’ took man further, paid, checked! man-made laws assure ‘justice’, a higher law produces ‘love’ it’s matter of the ‘heart’ INCREDIBLE LIFE & DEATH OF CHRIST is our example & means

6 Romans 5v1-6 Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so but we rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not not disappoint us because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Nb. Rejoice ‘in’ our sufferings not ‘because of’ suffering which is not meaningless – it develops character and ‘hope’ Hope is not ‘unfounded optimism’ but ‘blessed assurance of future destiny’ based on God’s love revealed by the Spirit and objectively demonstrated in the death and resurrection of Christ.

7 Challenges: Consider your lifestyle – spiritual and practical
1. How do I react to difficult situations? Faith, hope and love Rooted in the Word Living by the Spirit 2. Am I thankful and appreciative of His grace? Lifestyle, words, actions Demeanour, attitudes 3. Am I honouring Him and displaying His life in me? Blessing everyone around you, ‘neighbours’ Loving all those around you
