23.2 Applications of Circuits
Safety Devices for an overload or short circuit Overload when too many appliances are on at once Short circuit-when very low resistance is formed causing the current to be very large producing large amounts of heat
2
Fuse-a short piece of metal that will melt if the current gets too high
When the metal melts the circuit is open and the current won’t flow Circuit breaker-an automatic switch that opens the circuit when the current becomes too high Ground-fault interrupter-When an extra path is formed, such as a hair dryer in water, the ground-fault interrupter will detect even a small change in current and opens the circuit
3
Combined Series-Parallel Circuits
4
Ammeters A device that measures current
What type of circuit with the resistor? Does an ammeter have high or low resistance?
5
Voltmeter A device used to measure the voltage of the circuit
How is the voltmeter connected? Does a voltmeter have low or high resistance?
