Topic 1 Intro to Earth Science
It’s important to distinguish between what you observe (by using your senses) and what you infer (by using your thoughts) The better the observations, the better the inferences Accurate measurements are the best observations (mass, volume, weight, density) Accuracy of measurement is determined by using the Percent Error formula [ESRT]
2
Density Density is an identifying characteristic of Earth materials, unaffected by size or shape
3
Aerogel is an amazing example of density!
4
Density is affected by Temperature (inversely) Pressure (directly) Water is the only natural substance that is most dense as a liquid (at 4C)
5
Graphing Relationships Direct (positive) Inverse (negative) Cyclic
6
Dynamic Equilibrium The term “dynamic equilibrium” refers to changes occurring while maintaining balance
7
Ms Meschutt’s Extremely Picky, Borderline Pscho, Graphing Rules
Pencil only! Use a straight-edge for each axis Independent variable is on the x-axis (horizontal axis) Axes must be labeled! Including units! Points are connected with a single smooth line Appropriate scale for each axis (if zero is in the data it belongs in the origin) All data fits on the graph scale Graph makes the best use of available space A key is provided (if necessary) Title includes both variables
