What adults can learn from kids | Adora Svitak
Adora is a writer, speaker, and advocate for causes including feminism, youth empowerment, and literacy. Adora began delivering writing workshops at local schools after publishing a collection of short stories. Later, she began advocating for student voice at education conferences. In 2010, she delivered the speech “What Adults Can Learn from Kids” at TED. The speech has received more than 5 million views on TED.com alone, and been translated into more than 40 different languages. Her passion for amplifying the voices of youth led her to organize a team of students to produce a TEDx event for youth, TEDxRedmond. Pacific Standard Magazine called Adora one of the "30 Top Thinkers Under 30" and "an activist for feminism, liberal politics, and youth-oriented causes [...] pretty far up the road to becoming intellectual royalty." In 2018, she graduated with a major in Development Studies and minors in South Asian Studies and Creative Writing from UC Berkeley. She currently works at a nonprofit in San Francisco focused on child welfare.

Discussion questions What are some ways you can learn and benefit from working with youth? Why is it important to work with youth? What can Rotary do to learn from youth? How can we get more people involved in working with youth? Have participants break out into groups and have them discuss these questions. Bring them back together and facilitate the discussion as a larger group.

How you can get involved – Youth District level
Youth Exchange Rotary Youth Exchange is an exchange program for an academic year to be hosted by a family in another country. The program is nine months long where individuals will gain exposure to new languages, new ways of living and a new lens on the world. Interact Interact is a service club for teens aged that works with and for the community through various events, service projects, and fundraisers. Interact clubs are sponsored by their individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance; but, Interact clubs are entirely self-governed through club-elected officers and self-supported by individual fundraisers. Rotaract Rotaract clubs bring together people ages to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service. Here are the different youth programs from a district level. There are always opportunities to get involved. Youth Exchange – study abroad program Camp Royal – leadership camp around emotional intelligence Camp Venture – business camp Interact – local/district program Rotaract – local/district program Camp Royal Camp Royal is the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Conference organized each June in the mountains of Northern California. Camp Royal is an intensive leadership where you develop your skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. Camp Venture Camp Venture is a five day entrepreneurial boot camp held at the end of June each year for students who have an interest in pursuing business specifically entrepreneurs. Campers will work collaboratively to produce and present a business case at the end of the camp.
