1
Warm up: What are two types of DNA mutations Flush: What college do you want to go to? (Or career you want to do right after school?)
2
Write the DNA sequences down with the corresponding mRNA sequence
Quick Practice… Write the DNA sequences down with the corresponding mRNA sequence GCATATCG
3
What happens when the DNA mutates?
4
Types of RNA reading Directions: read and annotate the article then answer the analysis questions individually
5
Protein Synthesis Overview
Protein synthesis is the process of making proteins Two steps 1. Transcription (DNAmRNA) 2. Translation (mRNAAmino acid chain/protein) Purpose of translation: To take the mRNA strand that was made from DNA and create an amino acid chain, which will fold into a functional protein
6
Location of Translation
Translation occurs in the cytoplasm on the ribosome in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes
7
Steps of Translation 1. mRNA leaves the nucleus and binds to the ribosome (made of rRNA) 2. The first 3 letters (a codon) on mRNA is ‘read’ 3. the tRNA gets the corresponding amino acid from the cytoplasm and brings it to the ribosome 4. The next three letters are read and the process repeats until a STOP codon is reached
8
Peptide Bonds After the tRNA brings the amino acid to the ribosome, a peptide bond forms between each amino acid This creates a chain of amino acids, which is a protein
9
Label the diagram with the correct number from the steps
10
How do we determine which amino acid goes with which codon?
AUG GGA CCU
11
Codon Chart Practice
12
Gene to Protein
13
Protein Synthesis Stations
Travel to each station (there are two copies of each station) with a partner from your table Make sure the station number matches up with the correct number in the table Answer the questions in the boxes provided You may need to use your codon chart! When you are finished answer the reflection questions on a separate sheet of paper
14
Exit Ticket Draw a labeled diagram or illustrations that depicts transcription and translation
15
Homework: Homework Packet 5 due tomorrow!
Warm up: What is the function of tRNA during translation? Flush: What’s a phobia you have? Homework: Homework Packet 5 due tomorrow!
16
Alien Protein Synthesis
We’ve discovered small sequences of alien DNA Your job is to take the DNA, transcribe into mRNA and then take the mRNA and translate it into an amino acid sequence Using the amino acid sequence you will determine that physical traits of your alien Then, you will draw a picture of your alien
17
Flash Card time! protein synthesis, transcription, translation, nucleotide, RNA polymerase, cytoplasm, nucleus, DNA, mRNA, tRNA, amino acid, protein, ribosome, rRNA, point mutation, frameshift mutation, hydrogen bonds, phosphate backbone, nitrogenous bases, adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine, uracil
