Biology Do Now Directions: Take out a sheet of notebook (Do Now sheet) and read the definition of the term homeostasis, then answer each question. Homeostasis is the tendency to resist change in order to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment. [Homeo- means “similar to or like”; -stasis means “does not change”] 1) What does the word resist mean in the sentence “It was hard to resist not eating the last piece of chocolate cake.”? 2) What does the word maintain mean in the sentence “The college students tried to maintain a clean dorm room by sharing the cleaning responsibilities.”? 3) What does the word constant mean in the sentence “Earning a salary provides a constant supply of money to maintain decent lifestyle.”? 4) Work with a partner to create a definition for the term homeostasis without using your cell phone to “Google” it.

Keeping an internal environment the same without changing it
3
Please make sure you put your first and last name on your assignments so that you get the proper credit.
4
Home Assignment Get the expectation letter signed by parent or guardian (Due: February 5, 2019) Complete the Martian and the car worksheet.
5
Objectives Students will know the characteristics of living things by taking notes and completing a “Characteristics of Living Things” matching activity. Mastery: 70% (~10/15) or better.
6
If you have your expectation letter signed, take it out and turn it in for your 1st homework grade.
7
Unit 1 Vocabulary Words Alive Dead Abiotic Biotic Movement Respiration

8
UNIT 1: STRUCTURE & FUNCTIONS
Prepare to take notes. UNIT 1: STRUCTURE & FUNCTIONS Mr. Richards Characteristics of Living Things February 1, 2019
9
What is Biology? Biology is the science that seeks to understand the living world.
10
How can we define “life”?
11
Characteristics of Living Things
Made up of units called cells Can reproduce Are based upon a universal genetic code Can grow and develop Obtain and use nutrients and energy Respond to their environment Maintain a stable internal environment Change over time (as a group)
13
Made of Cells Cell: collection of matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings Unicellular: made of one cell Multicellular: made of more than one cell
14
Reproduction Produce new organisms
Sexual reproduction: cells from 2 different parents unite to form offspring (meiosis) Asexual reproduction: offspring has as single parent (mitosis)
15
Universal Genetic Code
Asexual reproduction—offspring and parent have same traits Sexual reproduction—offspring differ from parents in some ways Genetic code=DNA All living organisms follow this code Determines your inherited traits
16
Growth and Development
Can lead to an increase in size, a change in form, or an increase in #
17
Obtain Nutrients and Energy
Metabolism: (sum of an organism’s life processes) The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes Autotrophs: obtain energy directly from sunlight photosynthesis Heterotrophs: obtain energy by consuming other organisms respiration
18
Respond to Environment
Detect and respond to stimuli from their environment Stimuli: a signal to which an organism responds i.e. switching classes when the bell rings, pulling hand off a hot stove, Stimuli may be internal or external Internal—regulating blood sugar External—seeds germinating when soil is moist
19
Maintain a stable internal environment
Homeostasis: process by which organisms maintain a stable internal environment Usually involves feedback mechanisms Such as the blood sugar example sweating Think of a thermostat
20
Maintain a stable internal environment
Body systems included: Endocrine system—hormones Nervous system—uses nerve cells
21
Extend - Students will complete a worksheet involving matching the description with the characteristic of living things.
22
Exit Ticket: Use the eight characteristics of living things to determine if robots are more living or non-living. Support your explanation.
