Introduction to the History Internal Assessment (IA)
Purpose, overview, and dates
3
Purpose Why? What is the IA? Both SL and HL students need to do this; this is 20% of the HL grade Will be integrated into classroom instruction; we will work on this an average of once or twice a week until the end of the year Demonstrate the acquisition of skills and knowledge A historical investigation on a topic of your choice; does not have to line up with the syllabus Is 1,500-2,000 words; no more Cannot be a group project Should be a minimum of 20 hours outside of the classroom and 20 hours inside of the classroom Cannot be on any event that has happened in the last 10 years

Structure Composed of three elements (25 marks):
New curriculum (2017) Identification and Evaluation of sources (6 marks): Composed of three elements (25 marks): Identification and Evaluation of Sources (6 marks) Investigation (15 marks) Reflection (4 marks) Need to evaluate in detail 2 sources that you used Sources can be either primary or secondary Needs these 3 parts: Clearly state the question you chose Brief explanation of the 2 sources Analyzation of the 2 sources in detail
5
Investigation (15 marks): Reflection (4 marks):
Consists of the actual investigation Clearly organized Must contain critical analysis that focuses on the question being investigated Must have a variety of strong evidence to support your claims Must have a conclusion that you draw from the analysis Reflect on how your investigation revealed the methods and challenges faced by historians What methods used by historians did you use in your investigation? How can the reliability of resources be evaluated? What is the role of a historian? Is it difficult to establish “proof” in history?

Timetable & Important Dates
On average, we will be working on the IA at least once a week for the entire 4th quarter; this will include time in the computer labs, time in groups, and one- on-one time with me We will work on this piece by piece, starting with creating your question Thursday 3/24/16- Research Question Due Friday 4/08/16- Rough Draft of Source Evaluation Monday5/09/16- Rough Draft of Investigation Friday 5/20/16- Rough Draft of Reflection Friday 6/10/16- Final Copy of Rough Draft Due

The Ia Broken down into Smaller Parts
Overview: Academic Honesty: We will first work on our topic selection and developing our question From there, we will focus on gathering resources for you’re the evaluation of resources portion From there, we will work on our investigation Next, we will work on our reflection Finally, we will complete our bibliography This paper is graded externally, not by me If IB catches you plagiarizing or cheating in any way, you will be removed from the program. Period. We will talk about the proper way to cite sources and you will have access to Turnitin.com If there is ANY doubt about your work, double check
8
What can you expect in class?
Expectations: We will spend time looking at examples of IAs You will get to know the rubric in great detail We will spend time in the library, computer labs, and working in groups to help our research We will work with Ms. Kunc to help us find sources This is going to be hard work…keep the complaining to a minimum! This is IB! You need to work on this outside of class…really! Although the final product will not count in your grade for this class, try your hardest! You are representing Schurz! Create a schedule based off the due dates…and follow it!
