2 Running start basics Dual credit program for High School Juniors and Seniors Available Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters (quarter lasts 11 weeks) Able to take 15 college level credits per quarter 15 credits = Full time class load 5 college credits = 1 high school credit Must be 100 level courses and above to count for college credit and Running Start funding Can earn 9 high school credits per year if enrolled in 15 credits each quarter

3 How does a student qualify?
Must be a Junior or Senior in high school Must demonstrate that you are ready for college level courses ENGL & 101 Placement 10th grade students – take the Accuplacer at the college 11th grade students – SBA ELA score of 3 or 4, or HS transcript “B” or better in English 10 T2 College Math placement HS transcript “B” or better in Algebra 2 second semester

5 Being a college student means….
Classes move at a faster pace Grades appear on permanent college and high school transcript Balancing two different schedules (college and high school calendars differ) Different atmosphere/maturity level Communication between family/high school staff is limited – you must be responsible!

6 Running Start is NOT 100% Free
Program costs Running Start is NOT 100% Free Every quarter students pay: Student Fees (approx. $200 per quarter for full-time student) Course fees – be sure to check course catalog, fees vary Books = $250+ for full-time students Supplies Provide own transportation Financial Assistance: Student fee waiver & Book Loan Program: available to eligible students

7 Time management A fulltime course load at the college may only be 3 hours of class time per day Class study time that is expected at the college level for a week is twice the number of credits 15 credits x 2 = 30 hours of study required per week You must make your academics a priority to be successful If you are working, be sure to limit your work time to 15 hour or less per week

8 Flexibility Classes may fill up quickly
Be sure to check your regularly for reminders from PHS You will need to meet with your High School counselor in October, January, and April to complete your EVF form – be sure to schedule a meeting in advance to get your paperwork done on time You may need to take afternoon or evening classes, or enroll in courses at multiple locations (Puyallup, Fort Steilacoom, Graham Kapowsin High School) Remember that you if you are not able to get into a class you need, you can try again the next quarter. You may need to take certain courses at PHS: Algebra II and World Language Be sure to complete your high school requirements BEFORE Spring quarter Senior year

9 Running Start success Come to college prepared
Get to know your instructors and classmates Learn to ask for help and seek out FREE resources on campus: Tutoring Center Writing Center Counseling Career Advising Work with your college advisor and HS counselor Know academic progress at all times – professors will NOT be reminding you of deadlines, etc

10 Steps to enroll Complete online admissions application for fall 2019 – on college website You will receive an from the college with your ID and your next steps Visit the Testing webpage for the college – complete the Accuplacer at the college Bring photo ID and your College ID number to the test Schedule a time to meet with your PHS Counselor to complete your EVF (enrollment form) Bring a copy of your passing Accuplacer score and your yellow Running Start contract with you Meet with your academic advisor at the college Register for courses Follow up with your PHS Counselor to adjust your schedule at PHS as needed (drop or move classes)
