1 Narrative Structure & Novel's Form!!!!!!!!
Cathy, Nadia, Sarah, Julia, AND CAYLA!!!!!!!!! :) :)

2 Exposition  Starts off at the Salinas River during the 1930s in California  Time period associated with the Great Depression  The setting emits a very warm and hopeful feeling  "The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool," (Steinbeck 1). The area is secluded, yet bustling with inner action  "Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening," (Steinbeck 1). Main characters are introduced "The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features," (Steinbeck 2). "Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily," (Steinbeck 2).

3 Rising Action  George and Lennie are forced to find new jobs due to an incident at their jobs previous ones  They report to the nearby ranch and are hired, they meet Candy and Curley Curley's wife appeared to George and Lennie when they were alone in the bunkhouse and flirts with them  George and Lennie meet Slim, the skilled mule driver "His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject",(Steinbeck 33). George tells Slim the truth about him and Lennie and why they had to flee from their old jobs Carlson bothers Candy about his old dog, he eventually gave in after Slim said that the death would be relief to the suffering animal "A shot sounded in the distance. The men looked quickly at the old man. Every head turned toward him", (Steinbeck 49). Candy overhears George and Lennie discussing their plans to buy land and offers his life’s savings if they will let him live there too. The three make a pact to let no one else know of their plan Lennie crushes Curley’s hand "'I won't tell,' said Curley. He avoided looking at Lennie"  (it is here you can tell that tension between Curley and Lennie is rising and something bad is going to happen to Lennie, most likely because of Curley) men go into town, Lennie is left with Crooks, and Candy. Curley’s wife flirts with them Lennie accidentally kills his puppy in the barn, Curley’s wife enters

4 Climax Lennie accidentally kills the puppy. Curley's wife lets Lennie feel her hair, but then he accidentally breaks her neck. "Don’t you go yellin'," he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck"(Steinbeck 91). Finally, Lennie had gone too far, and this time killed somebody. The climax has been waited for from the beginning when Lennie kept getting away with his mistakes. There was going to be a time when his they were too bad to cover up, that being the death of Curley's wife. Then, Something had to be done so that he wouldn’t harm anyone else.

5 Falling Action Curley is enraged- he wants to kill Lennie
"I'm gonna shoot the guts outta that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand. I'm gonna get 'im" (Steinbeck 98) Lennie recognizes that he made a mistake  He remembers to go to the hiding place "George'll be mad, An'… he said... an' hide in the brush till he come" (Steinbeck 92) Carleson and the rest think that Lennie has taken his gun Candy finds Curley's wife's body  He tells George, who instantly knows it was Lennie's doing They realize their dream is going to stay a dream

6 Resolution Setting back to how it was in exposition- in the clearing by Salinas River Has a different mood than in exposition and is more melancholy  "But by the pool among the mottled sycamores, a pleasant shade had fallen (Steinbeck 99)." Lennie experiences hallucinations of his Aunt Clara along with a gigantic rabbit due to his guilt George finds Lennie in the brush and begins telling him the story about their dream of living on the farm for a final time George shoots Lennie in the head with the gun he stole; he told the guys that Lennie stole it & everyone buys it, but Slim knows what went down

7 Theme Meaningful friendships should be embraced regardless of the negative aspects that come along with it Relationships are structured like plot triangles The plot triangle within each chapter refelects the original interpretation of this story to be a play. There are many issues and resolutions that happen in a smaller sense rather than looking at the entirety of the novel. We looked into the bigger picture, but it is to be noted that each chapter takes you on a solo journey following the "mountain."
